Location – Templecombe

Hours - 4 day week Monday-Thursday / 37 hours per week

The Role

Thales Underwater Systems delivers a state of the art Sonar capability for UK and International Navies. Our systems are developed for a wide range of significant defence projects, including the Astute and Dreadnought class submarines, Merlin helicopters, Type 23 frigates and the Hunt class mine countermeasures vessel.

As a Machinist within Thales, you will become a key member of the manufacturing team based at our site in Templecombe where we are producing the next-generation of Sonar technologies, for which we are world-renowned.

Having already gained experience working with mills, lathes, turn-mill centres and CNC programming in a previous role this is an excellent opportunity for you to further your skills and really start to build a successful career with a leader in their field.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks

The successful candidates main purpose will be too manufacture and inspect components, sub-assemblies, tooling and fixtures in a team environment in order to meet production requirements

Programming, setting and operation of CNC mills and Lathes

Operation of manual mills and lathes

Operation of band saws (vertical and horizontal)

Inspection of components

Use of CAM software to program components

Ensuring measuring equipment is calibrated

Performing TPM on equipment

Processing finished components though the ERP system

Accountable for own productivity and quality

Assistance with training of other employees and apprentices in the most effective and safest methods of performing activities

Your Skills and Experience

You have experience of working on mills, lathes or turn-mill centres previously

You have some experience in online and offline CNC programming

You will ideally have served an apprenticeship as a turner or miller and have at least 2 years post apprenticeship experience (desirable though it is not a pre-requisite)

You are motivated and work well on your own as well as part of a team

You can follow instructions and are able to work well under deadline pressure

You understand technical drawings and can apply that to machining techniques

You show initiative in areas like problem solving and working unsupervised
