What we’re looking for

The Technical and Failure Investigation Department (TFI) provides world-class technical investigation services to global clients by carrying out engineering assessment and evaluation of systems and component failures to help ship owners and operators minimize business downtime. Using core engineering skills to identify and understand the root causes of failure, we provide customised solutions to allow recovery back to normal operation.

Reporting to the TFI Analytics Team Leader, key responsibility of this role is to carry out a wide range of technical investigations using computer-based analytical methods and detailed reporting of same.

The role

- To perform numerical assessments and provide specialist advice for service delivery, research or development work within agreed broad parameters that include budget constraints and contractual requirements.
- To produce the report deliverable within the agreed broad parameters in an appropriate format and take responsibility to review other employee’s work as requested.
- To provide technical support to other Advisory service teams as required including occasional on-site measurement, data acquisition and analysis assistance when required. This may involve foreign travel.
- To discuss / present the deliverable with the internal / external client and be able to suggest alternative solutions where appropriate.
- Undertake administration as required in line with current processes and procedures.
- Produce proposals and define required work to satisfy client’s expectations. Ensure consistency of proposals to clients according to established procedures.
- To assess / recommend the time / value of the work to be undertaken for an internal / external client within an agreed fee / cost structure and within the commercial aspects of the contract.
- To make recommendations based on internal / external client feedback to assist in service delivery improvement and to help build the business.
- Be pro-active in sharing knowledge with the team and advising colleagues based on reviews and own experience; build an internal network of contacts in order to gain knowledge from senior personnel within Lloyd’s Register.
- Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, accreditation schemes, legislation, and industry standards.
- To pursue Continuous Professional Development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.
- To mentor / coach other technical employees to achieve effective technical knowledge transfer and application.
- To undertake project management where applicable including monitoring project progress and spend against budget and contract requirements.

What you bring

- A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd’s Register within the relevant field of engineering or physical science (minimum of two years programme) or Qualifications from a marine or nautical institution and relevant sea-going experience as a certificated ship’s officer.
- Membership of an appropriate professional institution.
- Working towards achieving Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.
- Proficiency in the English Language commensurate with the work.
- Familiarity with MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW and FORTRAN would be an advantage.
- Understanding of signal processing and data analysis techniques.
- Working knowledge of numerical methods such as finite element (FE), boundary element (BE) methods such as NASTRAN, ABAQUS, ANSYS, MSc Marc, FEMAP, for stress analysis, fatigue analysis (including spectral fatigue). A knowledge of linear fracture mechanics such as CRACKWISE, BEASY and structural reliability-based techniques and probabilistic analyses would be an advantage.
- General knowledge of marine power plant engineering with particular emphasis on static and dynamic shaft alignment analysis of marine propulsion shafting systems; comprising diesel engines, electric motors, shafting, gearing, dampers, couplings, fixed pitch and controllable pitch propellers etc.
- Ability knowledge and experience to a wide range of technical investigations in the marine and offshore industry providing timely solutions in line with client expectations.
- Technical report writing skills.
- Eligible to live and work in the UK and meet standard visa requirements for overseas travel.
- Have or be able to achieve UK Naval security clearance without restrictions.
