Job summary

Pertemps Black Country Perms is recruiting a Machine Shop Shift Supervisor for a Dudley-area forgings manufacturer. You will lead a busy machine shop, plan work orders, manage labour, and ensure on-time delivery.

The role requires strong leadership and a proactive approach to improvement in a unionised environment. The position offers a stable day shift (6:00am–2:00pm), with responsibilities spanning supervision, quality adherence, and close collaboration with engineers and maintenance teams.

Qualifications

• Apprenticeship in manufacturing or engineering discipline.
• Leadership or management qualification desirable.
• IOSH certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Plan and organise work orders and labour resources to meet daily production targets.
• Ensure production time is fully utilised and departmental productivity is maximised.
• Monitor and approve timesheets and job bookings.
• Ensure parts are manufactured in accordance with drawings and procedures.
• Drive compliance with standard working practices and workflow processes.
• Identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities.
• Monitor departmental stock levels and controls.
• Provide daily direction to machine shop operatives.
• Collaborate with Engineers on new products and process development.
• Coordinate with Maintenance to minimise downtime.
• Promote 5S housekeeping and health & safety compliance.
• Maintain discipline and performance standards.

Machine Shop Shift SupervisorLocation:Dudley

Salary: £38,000 per annum

Hours: Monday to Friday, 6:00am - 2:00pm (Flexibility Required)

The Opportunity

Our client is a well-established forgings manufacturer based in Halesowen, Dudley, supplying high-quality forged components to a range of industrial sectors. Due to continued growth, they are seeking an experienced Machine Shop Shift Supervisor to lead and develop a team within a busy machine shop environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan and organise work orders and labour resources to achieve daily production targets and on-time delivery requirements.
• Ensure production time is fully utilised and departmental productivity is maximised.
• Monitor and approve timesheets and job bookings.
• Ensure all parts are manufactured in accordance with approved quality standards, route cards, drawings, and operating procedures.
• Drive compliance with standard working practices, workflow processes, cycle times, and work-in-progress controls.
• Identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities within production processes and techniques.
• Monitor, analyse, and manage departmental consumable stock levels.
• Provide daily direction and support to machine shop operatives.
• Work closely with Manufacturing and Project Engineers on new products and process development.
• Liaise with Quality Engineers to ensure quality expectations are understood and achieved.
• Coordinate with Maintenance teams to minimise downtime and maximise equipment availability.
• Develop and share technical knowledge of machine setup and operation across the team.
• Promote and maintain high standards of 5S housekeeping throughout the department.
• Ensure compliance with Health & Safety and Environmental regulations at all times.
• Maintain departmental discipline and performance standards in line with company policies.
• Undertake additional duties as required to support operational objectives.

Candidate Requirements

Experience

• Previous supervisory experience within a manufacturing, engineering, machining, or forgings environment.
• Proven experience managing and motivating teams.
• Strong understanding of machine shop manufacturing processes.
• Experience working within a unionised environment would be advantageous.

Qualifications

• Apprenticeship in a manufacturing or engineering discipline.
• Leadership or management qualification desirable.
• IOSH certification preferred.
