Job Description

Job Outline:

The Machine Shop Manager oversees daily operations in a machine shop environment (metal production and treatments), ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality production. This role includes supervising machinists and operators, coordinating workflow, maintaining equipment, and driving continuous improvement in production processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervision & Leadership

    • Lead, train, and manage a team of machinists, CNC operators, and operators.

    • Assign tasks, set priorities, and monitor performance and productivity.

    • Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.

    • Maintenance of good industrial relations.

  • Operations Management

    • Oversee daily machining operations to ensure efficiency, quality, and timely delivery.

    • Plan, schedule, and monitor production workflows and capacity.

    • Ensure compliance with technical specifications, tolerances, and quality standards.

  • Equipment & Maintenance

    • Monitor condition and performance of machines and tools.

    • Schedule preventative maintenance and coordinate repairs to minimize downtime.

    • Recommend upgrades or replacements of machinery and tools to move towards Industry 4.0.

  • Process Improvement

    • Analyse production data and implement lean manufacturing or Six Sigma practices.

    • Identify bottlenecks and implement strategies to increase throughput.

    • Collaborate with engineering and quality teams to optimise processes and reduce waste.

  • Inventory & Procurement

    • Manage inventory of raw materials, tools, and spare parts.

    • Coordinate with purchasing for materials and ensure just-in-time supply for operations.

  • Compliance & Safety

    • Enforce safety protocols and ensure OSHA or local safety compliance.

    • Conduct regular safety audits and training sessions for staff.

Personal Specification

  • Proven experience (5+ years) in a supervisory or management role in a machining or manufacturing environment.

  • Strong knowledge of machining processes (CNC, lathes, mills, grinders, etc.).

  • Familiarity with manufacturing software (e.g., ERP/MRP systems).

  • Strong experience of Sales and Operational Planning.

  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and CAD models.

  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong understanding of lean manufacturing, 5S, or Six Sigma principles is a plus.
