Job description
Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to work as a Lung Cancer Nurse Specialist (LCNS). This is an established post working with a large LCNS team and closely with a dedicated lung cancer MDT (team lung).

We are looking for a kind, dedicated team player with excellent communication skills and an interest in lung cancer to join our warm and highly skilled LCNS. You would need to embrace change and enjoy service development.

The LCNS covers a large cancer pathway providing advice, social and emotional support and information to patients and their loved ones throughout their pathway. We meet patients from pre-diagnosis, diagnosis, treatment (surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy) and palliative care. The role includes clinics, wards and telephone consultations from Monday to Friday, 9-5.

We offer a one-month supernumerary induction, ongoing education after placement, and an opportunity to attend a lung cancer conference each year with LCNUK or BTOG. You will be part of a wider network of LCNS in the East Midlands, enabling shared experiences and best practice. We welcome applications from people who identify as Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic, or Disabled, to improve representation at NUH.

In addition to the below summary, please familiarise yourself with the full job description and person specification documents attached to this advert.

Responsibilities
  • Attend the two MDTS weekly (one of these) and act as the patient’s advocate. Advise the wider MDT on patient and family wishes and inform them of physical and social issues which may affect treatment plans.
  • Attend Thoracic, Oncology and Respiratory clinics, supporting patients through the pathway and sharing patient care with other CNS colleagues such as palliative care, lung oncology and thoracic nurses.
  • Identify delays to treatment and facilitate optimal symptom control. Address prehabilitation at set intervals to optimise tolerance to treatment and improve quality of life (physical activity, nutrition, smoking cessation, psychological wellbeing).
  • Meet patients on the wards with a likely or actual lung cancer diagnosis, facilitate discharge, educate nurses and junior doctors, and ensure next steps and tests are requested promptly to support the National Optimal Lung Cancer Pathway (NOLCP).
  • Handle the incoming patient telephone line at set times. Organise admissions for sick patients and coordinate with social care or community colleagues to address symptom control while supporting families.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Educated to degree level; ability to prioritise workload and manage a caseload of patients.
  • Ability or willingness to teach other healthcare professionals about lung cancer formally and informally.
  • Excellent communication, empathy and kindness; prior experience caring for lung cancer patients.
  • Organised, autonomous and forward-thinking.
  • Experience in Respiratory Medicine, Oncology, Palliative Care, Thoracic surgery or community settings is advantageous.
