About the Role:

The Ammonia market strategist role is high impact, front facing, and is integral to the success of the Low Carbon Strategist organization within Trading Analytics and Insight at BP.

The Ammonia market strategist will focus on developing and updating ammonia supply/demand balances to inform trading and origination decisions. The successful candidate is a recognized market expert in fertilizer markets, well-versed in agricultural drivers of ammonia demand and supply pathways. They will utilize their knowledge to develop insights into short-term and medium-term drivers of the ammonia markets, focusing on the impact of short-term events on ammonia pricing and margins. The individual should have a deep understanding of ammonia/urea production costs, fertilizer trade patterns, ship tracking, and decarbonization supply pathways, including e-ammonia and CCUS. They should have a proven record of translating analytics into market insights and monetization strategies to support trade strategies and origination activities. Excellent communication skills are essential for productive discussions across multiple groups within BP, both internally to Trading & Shipping and with other divisions.

Key Accountabilities:

The ammonia market strategist will provide timely and insightful commercial analysis into ammonia markets, developing bespoke analytics as requested by the trading team. Priorities include forecasting capacity additions/closures, planned maintenance, demand trends by product (e.g., urea, ammonium nitrates, ammonium phosphates), and country-level trade. They will develop independent market analysis to inform short-term trading and medium-term origination opportunities. The individual must be highly commercial, independent, and able to distinguish between 'value to have' and 'nice to have' in analytics.

They should work effectively as part of a team, connecting dots across the low carbon markets. Collaboration with the Trading and Shipping organization, as well as engagement with stakeholders across Trading and Origination teams, is key. The role involves developing a cross-commodity analytical capability within the low carbon strategist organization and delivering on the strategic vision for capability development in this space.

Essential Education:
  • University degrees, examination certificates, or licenses confirming educational attainment.
  • Membership of a professional body or formal certification (e.g., PMI) demonstrating capability in a technical or professional field.
Essential Experience :
  • Understanding of ammonia and derivative markets, and decarbonization pathways.
  • Proficiency in constructing and maintaining techno-economic models.
  • Ability to develop supply/demand models and recognize structural market shifts.
  • Strong communication skills and experience in stakeholder engagement.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Attention to detail and data analytics modeling ability.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks under pressure.
Desirable Experience:
  • Understanding of natural gas markets and pricing drivers.
  • Experience as a Market Strategist in agricultural products or low carbon markets.
  • Knowledge of econometric modeling techniques.
