BASE HOSPITALS: The John Radcliffe Hospital/ Churchill Oxford/

Stoke Mandeville Hospital/ High Wycombe Hospital

WORK PATTERN: Full Shift.

ACCOMMODATION: The post holder is not required to be resident and if hospital accommodation is required then charges will be made.

ON CALL COMMITMENT: On-call rota participation expected. Approx. 1 in 10 with prospective cover.

Main duties of the job

The ENT Department

The main ENT Department is located in the West Wing at The John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. It provides emergency care and wide range of general and sub-specialty elective inpatient work for the Oxfordshire and surrounding regions. The on call rota and registrar training rotations are located across Oxford University Hospitals (John Radcliffe Hospital, the Churchill Hospital and The Horton Hospital) as well as Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS trust (Stoke Mandeville and High Wycombe Hospitals).

The department prides itself on being a regional tertiary referral centre for head and neck oncology, skull base surgery, paediatric ENT, specialist rhinology and otology including cochlear implants and bone anchored hearing aids. It is the hub of the Regional SpR Training Programme. It is an extremely supportive department with ample opportunity for learning and development.

You will be expected to attend ward rounds, undertake ward work and participate in holding the registrar on-call bleep as part of on call duties. You will have the opportunity to run clinics independently with consultant supervision and attend theatres to improve clinical and surgical skills. There are also regular teaching sessions run by the consultants and you will be expected to attend and contribute to monthly academic sessions, MDT and clinical governance.

Job responsibilities

DESCRIPTION OF ROLE / DUTIES

Your role will involve the following service provision:

  • Inpatient care

- Providing medical management for all ENT patients at the John Radcliffe/Churchill hospital

  • Emergency ENT service

- Including registrar on-call bleep, providing support to on Call SHOs and managing referrals internally (from A&E and other wards) and externally (from primary care and referring hospitals)

- Assessing and managing patients on the GP Referral Unit (acute ENT referrals)

  • Outpatient care

- Regular ENT clinic based on the sub-specialty firm you are working for.

- Supporting Foundation doctors, GP trainees and clinical fellows in running emergency clinics.

  • Theatre

- Approximately 2 whole days of theatres per day for improving surgical skills under consultant supervision

In addition, there will be opportunities to be involved in the following for educational and training purposes

  • ENT operating lists
  • Departmental teaching sessions
  • Clinical Governance meetings
  • Audit, Research and Quality Improvement
  • Anatomy Demonstrating and Medical Student teaching (affiliation with Oxford University)
Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Full GMC registration
  • MRCS
Experience
  • General training in Otolaryngology/Head & Neck surgery
  • Minimum 1 year NHS experience
  • 2 years specialization in ENT (ST3 or above)
  • Commensurate with level of experience; knowledge of limits
  • Interest in research & audit with publications
Skills and Knowledge
  • Sufficient leadership, organisational,
  • communication, professional and personal skills too
  • effectively undertake the role of ENT registrar in a busy teaching hospital.
  • Good personal and interpersonal skills
  • Good spoken and written English. Communication skills should be highly developed.
  • Some experience of teaching undergraduates and trainees
  • Experience of routine clinical audit
  • Management training and experience
