Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Locum Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics (with a specialist interest in knee or upper limb trauma) to join the Trauma and Orthopaedics Directorate at University Hospitals Dorset (UHD).

This post is a trauma-specific, fixed-term role for 12 months, with the potential for a substantive post in the following year, aligned with departmental needs.

UHD's Trauma and Orthopaedics service is extensive, with cross-site operations. Trauma and paediatric surgery are conducted at the Poole site, Europe's largest fragility fracture centre, serving over 1200 surgical patients annually and supporting over 100 trauma beds. Elective orthopaedics are performed at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital in a dedicated facility.

As part of UHD's 2020 formation, a clinical service review and reconfiguration are underway. The Royal Bournemouth Hospital will become the acute site, and Poole Hospital the planned care site, launching in early 2026. UHD will then be the UK's largest single-site Elective Surgical Hub.

Key collaborations include the Dorset Integrated Care System, UHD Strategy and Transformation Directorate, and Bournemouth University's Institute of Orthopaedic Research.

About us

Our values define #TeamUHD, guiding our interactions with patients, visitors, colleagues, and our community. UHD is investing in service development following the merger and the New Hospital Programme, which may involve site moves either temporarily or long-term. Interviewers will be happy to discuss these details at interview.
