A leading healthcare provider in London is seeking a Consultant in Trauma & Orthopaedics to join its team. The role involves managing complex trauma, participating in clinical governance, and providing teaching to junior staff. Candidates must hold full GMC registration and have significant experience in trauma management. Introduction
This post will be for a consultant in Trauma & Orthopaedics, with expertise in complex trauma, foot and ankle surgery and some paediatric clinics. The post will be for 10 PAs. On-call cover will be based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich covering a 1 in 11 on-call rota for weekends and non-resident nights and 1:8 for weekdays with (Wednesday week 1:3 on call). Daytime elective work can be scheduled at both hospital sites, but is almost always undertaken at the Lewisham hospital site due to the number of operating theatres on this site. Trauma activity can be scheduled at both sites.
Proven competency in trauma and lower limb surgery will be required. This post is important to the Trust to ensure the continuation of our excellent and busy Orthopaedic Service and support the 18-weeks target. The successful candidates would join the existing team of 20 substantive consultants at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The appointment will be made in accordance with the 2003 Consultant Terms and Conditions of Service. The post holder will be expected to provide regular trauma sessions and to participate in clinical governance and teaching activity. Duties of post
1. The post holder will participate in the Consultant led trauma service to maintain a high quality trauma service with Consultant involvement in early operative work and fracture clinic supervision. The appointee would be encouraged to further develop and update skills in the acute management of complex fractures and the management of a foot & ankle service.
2. The Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust serves a young sporty population and the referrals of sports related and soft tissue problems are also increasing. The candidate will be expected to be competent in managing these patients.
3. The post holder will be required to adopt a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge in partnership with other consultant colleagues.
4. He/she will be expected to fully participate in the teaching activities of the Directorate.
5. For the purpose of management and use of resources, he/she will be accountable to the Clinical Director of Orthopaedics and work closely with the Service Manager.
6. He/she will share in the Directorates management and administrative responsibilities.
7. The post holder undertakes, exceptionally, to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
8. The appointee will be responsible for the professional supervision and management of junior staff and participate in their appointment with other Consultants.
9. The appointee will be expected to participate in postgraduate teaching of medical staff and undergraduates attached to the Trust and in the training of all grades of staff.
10. The appointee will participate on a regular basis in the process of Clinical Audit within the department and take on the audit role for the department. The appointee will be expected to attend department and divisional clinical governance meetings as requested.
11. He/she will be required to maintain an on-call (1:8 weekdays and 1:11 weekends) commitment and to provide prospective cover for colleagues on a mutually agreed basis in respect of absence from duty. He/she will be expected to co-operate in the present agreed framework of the directorate management structure arrangements.
