Job description

South West Scotland Vascular Network (SWSVN)

Locum Specialty Doctor in Vascular Surgery (12 months)

NHS Lanarkshire - University Hospital Hairmyres

This post is available from August 2025. The successful applicant will support the SWSVN, the second major vascular unit in the West of Scotland covering the populations of NHS Lanarkshire, Ayrshire and Arran and Dumfries and Galloway. This post offers an excellent opportunity to gain a wide experience in vascular and endovascular surgery in a large, expanding unit which serves approximately 1.2 million population and is one of the largest vascular units in Scotland. A new state of the art hybrid operating theatre was opened in 2021 to compliment the surgical and interventional radiology facilities already available. At the end of this fixed term the successful applicant would be in an advantageous position to apply for any permanent post that may become available.

The successful applicant will be based in University Hospital Hairmyres, the hub for the new regional Centre, where they will undertake a share of on call duties and other elective activities. However, they may also be asked to cover clinics, theatre and other elective activities in NHS Ayrshire and Arran’s where clinical sessions are delivered in University Hospital Crosshouse (20 minutes by car from Hairmyres) and University Hospital Ayr (34 miles and 40 minutes by car from Hairmyres)

The emphasis will be on building a strong team structure to support all aspects of the regional vascular service. Due to the volume of both elective and emergency work currently undertaken, it is expected that the post holders will have ample opportunity to develop vascular surgical and endovascular skills and indeed previous post holders have gone on to secure substantive consultant positions.

Applicants should hold full GMC registration with a license to practice and have at least four years full time post postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part time or flexible basis). At least two of which will be in a specialty training program in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty or shall have equivalent experience and competencies. Applicants should also possess the MRCS (or equivalent) and have experience at middle grade/senior middle grade level in general surgery.
