NHS Ayrshire & Arran invites applicants for the position of Locum Specialty Doctor Breast Clinician for the South West Scotland Breast Screening Service. The initial term is 3 months with the possibility of extension by mutual agreement.

We currently have 1 vacancy. The successful candidate will join a friendly, dynamic team of 2 Consultant Breast Radiologists, 1 Associate Specialist, 1 Staff Grade Clinician, and 2 Consultant Mammographers. The role can be solely as a breast clinician or include reporting on screening mammography.

The service is based mainly at the South West Scotland Breast Screening Centre at Ayrshire Central Hospital in Irvine, with some services at University Hospital Crosshouse. The hospitals are 9 miles apart, about 15 minutes by car, with ample free parking. Travel times from Glasgow are approximately 30 minutes.

Ayrshire Central Hospital hosts the South West of Scotland Breast Screening Unit and the county’s largest community hospital, offering NHS continuing care, outpatient clinics, and therapy services.

The department fosters a friendly, collaborative environment with good integration with clinical teams and frequent consultation with colleagues, either face-to-face or remotely.

NHS Ayrshire & Arran is accredited with the West of Scotland Deanery, hosting ST1-ST5 trainees, and has high scores on GMC training surveys. Medical students from the University of Glasgow also rotate through the hospitals.

The screening service covers women aged 50-70 in Ayrshire, Arran, and Dumfries and Galloway, screening approximately 86,000 women over a three-year cycle, using digital mammography and Philips PACS for image viewing.

The role offers part-time employment based on a 10 programmed activity framework, with flexible and family-friendly working options. Opportunities for additional programmed activities may be available depending on service needs.
