Job description

Locum Remote and Rural GPs
Primary Care Department
Mainland Out of Hours and Isles Network of Care

NHS Orkney is looking for GPs for their Locum Bank. NHS Orkney uses locum GPs for two services:

  • The Orkney Mainland Out of Hours (OOH) service
  • Providing a 24/7 service to one of the outer isles of Orkney.

The Orkney archipelago comprises a large central island and around 70 smaller islands, about 20 of which are inhabited. The total population of Orkney is about 22,000, of which approximately 3,000 live on islands without land access to Kirkwall.

Orkney OOH GP service covers Orkney Mainland and the linked Southern Isles (Approximately 19,500 people) during the OOH period.

The Isles Network of Care (INOC) covers people living on the other islands through a unique model of care in which resident clinicians on the isles provide continuous 24/7 care to meet both the routine and urgent care needs of their communities. INOC brings together GPs on Westray, Stronsay, Sanday and Hoy and Nurse Practitioners on Rousay, Flotta, Shapinsay, Eday, North Ronaldsay and Papa Westray.

INOC meets weekly by Microsoft Teams to discuss interesting cases or significant events, to discuss relevant issues, to learn together and to support each other. As a locum island GP, you would therefore always have experienced colleagues to call on for advice and support.

NHS Orkney uses the GP Locum Bank predominantly to cover short-term vacancies, for example, when practitioners are unable to work due to illness or bereavement. This means that our requirements are often at very short notice. We are fortunate to have a group of very experienced and reliable GPs on our Locum Bank and we are looking for more GPs who would like to join them.

We require our Locum GPs to have undertaken the BASICS Scotland Pre Hospital Emergency Care Course, or have relevant experience that equips them to deal with emergencies within the community, whilst waiting to undertake the BASICS course. NHS Orkney provides standardised protocols, equipment and medications to support our practitioners to deliver emergency care.

Benefits of joining NHS Orkney’s Locum GP Bank include:

  • Competitive pay
  • Invaluable experience

Applicants are required to evidence current GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice and inclusion on the GP Register on application and at the point of interview.
