Locum Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Haematology/Oncology (mat cover) – NHS Medical & Dental: ST3-ST5

Overview

The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest NHS teaching trusts in the country. It provides a wide range of general and specialist clinical services and is a base for medical education, training and research. The Trust comprises four hospitals: the John Radcliffe Hospital, Churchill Hospital, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Headington and the Horton Hospital in Banbury. The post is primarily based at the Children’s Hospital Oxford (CHOX) at the John Radcliffe Hospital, with the requirement to work at other Trust locations and outreach clinics as needed. The role is suitable for someone with haematology experience (adult or paediatric) to develop paediatric haematology and oncology skills.

3. ACTIVITY: 40 hours/week, no on-call commitments

5. ACCOUNTABLE TO: Clinical Lead/Director

6. PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES: To join the Paediatric Haematology/Oncology team in providing a regional service for children with cancer and haematological disorders.

The post holder’s duties will be at CHOX, with willingness to work across Trust locations and outreach clinics. The post is suitable for developing paediatric haematology and oncology skills, with possible relevance to haematology experience from adult or paediatric settings.

Main duties of the job

Clinical duties:

The successful candidate will work at Higher Specialty Trainee level and will manage patients aged 0-19 years with a range of solid and CNS tumours, malignant and non-malignant haematological conditions. Duties include inpatient management, on-treatment and follow-up clinics on the oncology day ward, and a twice-weekly general anaesthetic session including bone marrow aspirates/trephines and lumbar punctures with intrathecal chemotherapy. The postholder will liaise with doctors and community nurses in Oxfordshire and TVCA shared care units, develop skills to prescribe chemotherapy (after appropriate training), attend multidisciplinary meetings, and organise investigations for patients.

Laboratory/other responsibilities: Depending on experience, may include reporting films, CSF and bone marrows.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

An indicative timetable and Job Plan are outlined below; the final Job Plan will be agreed with the clinical lead on appointment and reviewed periodically.

Summary of main duties:

  • Participate in management of inpatients
  • Organise investigations and follow-up test results
  • After appropriate training: perform bone marrow aspirates and trephines, lumbar punctures with intrathecal chemotherapy, and prescribe chemotherapy

Dependent on experience: laboratory reporting of films, CSF and marrow samples.

  • MONDAY: morning handover
  • TUESDAY: morning Interventional Radiology list (8.15 start); Clinical Care Meeting (monthly)
  • WEDNESDAY: morning Kamran’s day care (8.15 start); 3.00 pm Morphology review session
  • THURSDAY: morning Interventional Radiology list (8.15 start); Neuro-Oncology MDT; MDT meeting and ward round; afternoon chemotherapy writing/Kamran’s Day Care; afternoon management/audit/SPA
