Whilst we are a large Trust, it is essential that we ensure all our communities, patients and colleagues receive a personal and positive experience when they interact with the Trust reflected in our new vision Leading in Healthcare, Trusted in Communities.This is an exciting time to be joining the Hepatology Team at UHL with investment being secured to expand the consultant and Clinic Nurse Specialist (CNS) teams. We are delighted to offer opportunities for a locum hepatology consultant. The post will work across the 3 sites within UHL and have Community sessions within their job plan.
We are looking for a locum Consultant Hepatologist who can show that they lead in the right way and that can evidence what they deliver. We will work together as a team across UHL to drive improvements in care and to create an environment in which individuals and teams can excel.
There is increasing demand for inpatient and outpatient services in LLR with some of the highest levels of liver related death in England. The outpatient service has been designed to most efficiently identify the level of liver fibrosis in those with alcohol or the metabolic syndrome risk factors, and separate them from the assessment of those that have a positive NILS. We have been working with LLR ICB to encourage systematic screening for liver fibrosis in the community. We are experimenting with new models of care that puts the emphasis on lifestyle interventions in primary care as the key to reducing death rates in hepatology in the future. We are also looking at whether patients with compensated cirrhosis can remain in primary care for their surveillance, with virtual support from UHL hepatology via our established electronic advice and guidance. In the next year, our Hepatocellular carcinoma surveillance programme is being redesigned with 3 new CNS posts and an administrator/navigator.
This appointment will provide consultant ward rounds, outpatient services (potentially including viral hepatitis), hot clinics and endoscopic services, including potentially EUS and ERCP. Successful candidates will be expected to be involved in Undergraduate and Postgraduate education and research.

Key Tasks Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients. To share with colleagues responsibility for the day-to-day management of patients. To promote new ways of working and co-ordinating care for patients in the community and to ensure that services are based on effective and integrated partnerships across the health community. Take part in multidisciplinary case conferences. Supervise and train junior medical staff To be involved in appraising and assessing juniors. Teaching, research and administration. To proactively develop the service. To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit. Participation on a rotational ward cover for between 21-24 inpatient hepatology beds across two wards at the LRI General hepatology outpatient clinics within UHL +/- UHL in the Community, Endoscopy sessions across UHL +/- UHL in the Community. Opportunity for flexible working including weekend endoscopy sessions There are opportunities to participate in the endoscopy training academy as well as becoming a faculty member for JAG courses run at UHL.
We have had significant national investment with a new 2 roomed endoscopy unit opening at Hinckley Hospital (CDC) in June 2025. In October 2025 we will open a new Endoscopy Unit at the LGH site which will comprise of 6 procedure rooms. The unit will have excellent training facilities with SMOTS installed in three procedure rooms linking to a large seminar room which will facilitate the wide range of JAG courses the department run.
