Sheffield Children’s Hospital is looking for a Locum Consultant Plastic Surgeon with training and subspecialty interest in paediatric burns and plastics surgery. This 10 PA vacancy offers an exciting opportunity to join a dedicated team providing high-quality care for young patients.

The on-call service operates on a 1:16 basis, covering multiple sites across Sheffield and including adult plastic surgery trauma and emergencies.

Plastic Surgery Services are provided across three sites: Royal Hallamshire Hospital, which offers mainly elective services including Skin, Breast, Head and Neck, and Sarcoma; Northern General Hospital, which handles acute services including Adult A&E, Burns, Trauma, and Hand Surgery; and Sheffield Children’s Hospital, which focuses on paediatric services.

Main duties of the job

Reporting into the Clinical Director, your responsibilities will include:

Paediatric Plastic Surgery:

  • Provide clinic and theatre sessions for both elective and acute paediatric plastic surgery services.
  • Current workload: Approximately 2.5 theatre lists and 2.5 outpatient clinics per week.
  • You will work according to the terms and conditions of the national consultant contract.

Teaching and Training:

  • Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate education.
  • Providing you remain a consultant in the Trust, you will be regarded as an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Sheffield, subject to university regulations.

Support and Resources:

  • Office accommodation, access to a PC, and secretarial support are provided.

Duties Allocation and Review

  • Allocation of time between your duties may be adjusted, in consultation with colleagues and the employing Trust.
  • There will be an annual review with the Clinical Lead as part of the Job Plan process.

Person specification
Qualifications
  • Registered (or eligible to be registered) with the GMC with a licence to practise.
  • Name on the specialist register for Plastic Surgery or eligible within 6 months of the date of the interview
  • MD or PhD or equivalent
Experience
  • Broad experience in the generality of Plastic Surgery, both adult and paediatric, with a particular emphasis on the surgical management of paediatric conditions.
  • Needs to have current Safeguarding Child/Adult, Paediatric Burns experience/competencies
  • Good knowledge of modern surgical techniques and competence in microsurgical techniques
  • Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors
  • Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate.
  • Publications in Peer reviewed journals.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of clinical governance
  • Evidence of collaborative working
