LOCUM CONSULTANT PHYSICIAN IN REHABILITATION MEDICINE

This is a 10PA appointment for a Locum Consultant for a 6 month fixed term.

This post will deliver 10PAs supporting the Rehabilitation Medicine team. The post-holder will provide support for inpatient and outpatient services. The post will be based at Chapel Allerton Hospital.

The successful applicant should hold membership in the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent, and should be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK, or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.

Applicants should have established skills in Rehabilitation Medicine. Excellent communication and team working skills, a strong commitment to teaching and service development are essential.

Main duties of the job

The role of consultant physician in rehabilitation medicine will be expected to provide medical leadership to the rehabilitation team, facilitate clinical governance, deliver education and research, and contribute to the management of the service. The clinical work focuses primarily on complex inpatient rehabilitation and musculoskeletal rehabilitation within Chapel Allerton Hospital.

It is expected that the postholder will work with NHS and University colleagues to maintain the National Demonstration Centre as a centre of excellence for clinical services, research, and teaching in areas relevant to Rehabilitation Medicine.

Job responsibilities

Rehabilitation services in Leeds are designated a National Demonstration Centre in Rehabilitation and a Level 2a supra-district rehabilitation service. The service covers the immediate catchment area of Leeds for secondary care with tertiary referrals from the WYAAT region.

At Chapel Allerton Hospital there are designated wards with 30 beds for inpatients participating in complex rehabilitation and the rehabilitation medicine outpatient department. On the Seacroft Hospital site there is the regional amputee rehabilitation centre, the Leeds Orthotic service and the Wheelchair and Special Seating Service. On the St James's University and Leeds General Infirmary sites there are acute liaison rehabilitation services and outpatient services.

There are close ties between the NHS department and the Academic Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Leeds. Since 1974, the department has been involved in a broad spectrum of research activity involving local, national and international collaboration. The post holder will support research endeavours with the Academic Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Leeds.

  • Applicants must provide information regarding their status from the GMC and/or relevant Royal College at the time of application

Qualifications

Essential

  • Accreditation in MRCP in the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent and have completed higher specialist training if currently in a training programme within the UK.
  • It is expected that the appointing has experience of neurological and musculoskeletal rehabilitation in a tertiary hospital setting with higher specialist training.

  • Evidence of research contributions to clinical research programmes
  • Evidence of teaching and provision of clinical supervision of specialty trainees

Clinical Experience and Career Progression

  • Competence in the medical management of complex disabling conditions taking into account any pre-existing physical or psychological condition
  • Competence in the provision of functional prognoses to patients
  • Experience in the evaluation of rehabilitation potential and prescription of rehabilitation interventions
