Job description

Locum Consultant Physician in Orthogeriatric's & Geriatric Medicine

Applications are warmly welcomed to join a specialist multidisciplinary team contributing to the provision of our comprehensive geriatric medicine service. We are looking to appoint a locum consultant geriatrician for one year, starting June 2025, to join our dynamic and enthusiastic team at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust. This is a 10 PA consultant post in Elderly Care Medicine with an interest in Orthogeriatrics, to cover the maternity leave of an existing Consultant.

This is a rotational post with 3 other consultants and is expected to rotate in 8 week blocks through the following areas: a dedicated hip fracture unit, an acute elderly care ward, and a liaison service on the Trauma and Orthopaedic wards. This post will also involve a commitment to an outpatient clinic (movement disorders, general elderly care, or complex pre-operative assessment). The post will also include participation in the Elderly Care Physician on call rota at approximately 1:16.

Main duties of the job

We post holder will be expected to:

To provide, with colleagues, a Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment liaison service for frail older patients admitted to Trauma and Orthopaedic wards with fragility fractures, blunt chest trauma and head injuries.

To manage patients on an acute Elderly Care ward, working closely with colleagues in the multidisciplinary team and providing consultant support to the medical team.

To manage patients admitted from the Emergency Department to a dedicated hip fracture unit, overseeing their perioperative care and, with the multidisciplinary team manage their post-operative rehabilitation.

To provide, with colleagues, timely Comprehensive geriatric assessment, falls and bone health assessment on all patients with fractured neck of femur, distal femoral fractures and periprosthetic fractures in line with the best practice tariff.

To enhance and support our outpatient services, with potential to help develop the perioperative medicine service, or input into General geriatrics or Movement Disorders clinics.

To provide on-call cover for the Elderly Care Physician (ECPOD) on call on a 1 in 16 rota. On-call is Category A with 3% on-call intensity supplement. Specific fixed weekday to be confirmed.

Prospective cover for each other's annual leave will be shared equally between the consultant team and often involves cover of the inpatient wards.

Active participation in monthly clinical governance meetings within the department.

Education and Qualifications
  • Full registration with the GMC/eligible for registration Within 6 months of CCST in (Speciality) at interview date
  • Membership of the Royal College of Geriatric Medicine of the United Kingdom or equivalent
  • Higher degree e.g. PhD/ MD submitted/awarded
Clinical Experience, Knowledge & Skills
  • Fully trained in Geriatric Medicine and General Internal Medicine
  • Ability to make decisions at consultant level
  • Knowledge of Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) and its application
  • Sub-specialty interest & experience in an area of Geriatric Medicine
  • Knowledge/experience of geriatric medicine outpatient services
Audit Management & IT
  • Ability to work within clinical governance guidelines
  • Undertake audits and present data as required
  • Good IT skills, use of patient and hospital database
  • Evidence of clinical leadership role demonstrating accountability for quality of care, financial controls and efficient management of workforce
