Job description

Job summary

Applications are warmly welcomed to join a specialist multidisciplinary team contributing to the provision of our comprehensive geriatric medicine service. We are looking to appoint a locum consultant geriatrician for one year, starting June 2025, to join our dynamic and enthusiastic team at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust. This is a 10 PA consultant post in Elderly Care Medicine with an interest in Orthogeriatrics, to cover the maternity leave of an existing Consultant.

This is a rotational post with 3 other consultants and is expected to rotate in 8-week blocks through the following areas: a dedicated hip fracture unit, an acute elderly care ward, and a liaison service on the Trauma and Orthopaedic wards. The post will also involve outpatient clinics (movement disorders, general elderly care, or complex pre-operative assessment). Additionally, the role includes participation in the Elderly Care Physician on-call rota at approximately 1:16.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will be expected to:

  1. Provide, with colleagues, a comprehensive Geriatric Assessment liaison service for frail older patients admitted to Trauma and Orthopaedic wards with fragility fractures, blunt chest trauma, and head injuries.
  2. Manage patients on an acute Elderly Care ward, working closely with multidisciplinary team colleagues and providing consultant support to the medical team.
  3. Manage patients admitted from the Emergency Department to a dedicated hip fracture unit, overseeing perioperative care and collaborating on post-operative rehabilitation.
  4. Deliver timely comprehensive geriatric assessment, falls, and bone health assessments for patients with fractured neck of femur, distal femoral fractures, and periprosthetic fractures, in line with best practice tariff.
  5. Support outpatient services and contribute to developing perioperative medicine or general geriatrics/movement disorders clinics.
  6. Provide on-call cover for the Elderly Care Physician on a 1:16 rota, with Category A on-call and a 3% on-call intensity supplement.
  7. Share cover for each other's annual leave, often involving inpatient ward coverage.
  8. Participate actively in monthly clinical governance meetings.
