Job summary

Locum Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedics (Lower Limb) at St Mary’s Hospital, Isle of Wight NHS Trust, Newport. This fixed term post for 12 months offers 10 programmed activities and a 1:7 on-call commitment.

The successful candidate will join a friendly multidisciplinary team to deliver elective and trauma care, participate in audit and research, and support patient care for island residents and visitors with opportunities for professional development.

Qualifications

• MBBS or equivalent. MRCS or equivalent.
• Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for orthopaedics and trauma; CESR or eligible for entry on the Register or within 6 months of the receipt of Certificate of Completed Training (CCT) at the time of interview.
• Lower limb arthroplasty fellowship and training in orthopaedics and trauma.

Responsibilities

• To assist in the provision of a comprehensive orthopaedic and trauma service.
• To lead in the day-to-day management of orthopaedic and trauma patients.
• To undertake theatre lists and clinics as required.
• To participate in the 1:7 on-call rota with prospective cover for leave.

The Trauma and Orthopaedic Department based at St Mary’s Hospital is looking to recruit a Locum Consultant for a period of twelve months. We are looking for a highly motivated doctor to join our team and support with reducing our elective waiting list.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work as part of the Consultants team and will be exposed to a wide range of elective and trauma surgery. The department is actively involved in audit and research and there are opportunities for the post holder to be involved in both.

The post holder will be expected to participate in a non-resident 1:7 on call commitment.

The Orthopaedic Department provides an integrated Orthopaedic and Trauma service and has facilities which include: elective and trauma wards for in-patient care, day-case unit, two Trauma & Orthopaedic theatres, designated Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, x-ray and out-patient suite.

Experience and Skills

• Completion of lower limb arthroplasty fellowship and completion of a recognised training programme in orthopaedics and trauma.
• Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in orthopaedics and trauma.
• Special interest in lower limb surgery and knowledge of current trends in speciality.
• Interest in foot and ankle surgery
• Interest in soft tissue knee surgery

Teaching Audit and Research

• Experience of teaching and training undergraduates, postgraduates and junior medical staff.
• Evidence of participation in clinical audit relevant to speciality.
• Publication in reviewed journals/ Published audits
