Locum Consultant Orthodontist

The closing date is 19 May 2025

The department is supported by main hospital radiographic facilities located close to the department, which supply all standard views that are required.

There is a fully equipped polyclinic for orthodontic use with 5 dental chairs, extensive modern storage & work surface areas. There are 2 separate teaching surgeries with a full equipped dental chair in each, shared with Maxillofacial Surgery.

There are 3 orthodontic consultant offices as well as offices for registrars & resident doctors, orthodontic therapists & clerical support. The registrar room & resident doctor room can be opened up to provide a large seminar room for teaching.

There is a large well equipped maxillofacial / orthodontic laboratory, arranged into three distinct working areas with separate office accommodation for the Senior Medical Technical Officer.

The department is supported by the Matron for Maxillofacial surgery & orthodontics who has office accommodation adjacent to the clinic. The nurses office is located within the clinical area & the nurses station is adjacent to the clinic facilitating patient flow.

The secretarial staff supporting the orthodontic team comprises a medical secretary & a support secretary.Secretarial support will be available to the appointee from within the team.

The department at the Burton site is based in the main hospital outpatient department

Main duties of the job

The timetable will vary depending on whether it is term or non-term time and on the agreed job plan. The timetable is based on a 4 week pattern and an example of the pattern is available within the Job Description. This timetable will be subject to change from time to time to meet the needs of the service and dependant on Consultant leave.

Job responsibilities

The appointed locum consultant will work a 7.5PA job plan including SPA and Admin, working cross site between RDH and QHB.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • BDS or equivalent
  • Success in Intercollegiate Specialty Examination or equivalent or within 3 months of completion of FTTA training
  • Master's Degree or equivalent in Orthodontics
  • Entry on GDC Specialist Register for Orthodontics
  • Full GDC Registration with a license to practice at time of application
  • Clinical training & experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK ISFE in Orthodontics
  • 12 months experience in a UK Health Care setting
  • A minimum of 2 years post qualification experience
  • Minimum 5 years supervised training in an appropriate SpR/FTTA equivalent training programme
Clinical knowledge and skills
  • Applicant's knowledge is up to date and is safe to practice
  • Experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk. Knows when to seek help, able to prioritise clinical need
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems
  • Ability to take full & independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
