Locum Consultant Occupational Health Physician

The Trust are currently recruiting for a locum full-time (10 PA) Locum Consultant Occupational Physician post in the Centre for Occupational Health and Wellbeing based at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Headington, Oxford OX3 9DU.

The successful candidate will join our SEQOHS accredited, multidisciplinary Occupational Health team.

Main duties of the job

This role will be instrumental in promoting the success of the Occupational Health (OH) Service ensuring that employees receive a high quality service based on the principles of good clinical governance.

The primary outcome will be that the highest standards of OH are achieved and the post holder will maximise the use of resources and exploit development opportunities to their fullest potential.

The post holder will demonstrate specialist knowledge and expertise in OH as a clinician, educator, advisor and advocate. Other outcomes will include empowering staff within the field, acting as a change agent and role model, and ensuring good working relationships.

The underlying aim and value of this role is to provide occupational health advice of a high quality that promotes the optimum level of health and wellbeing for employees.

Job responsibilities

Key Result Areas:

  • Clinical Services: Provide expert occupational health advice and clinical services to employees, ensuring high standards of care and compliance with relevant regulations and guidelines.
  • Health Assessments: Conduct pre-employment health assessments, fitness for work evaluations, and health surveillance programs to monitor and promote employee health and well-being.
  • Risk Management: Identify and assess workplace health risks, develop and implement strategies to mitigate these risks, and provide guidance on health and safety policies.
  • Training and Education: Deliver training and educational sessions to staff on occupational health topics, promoting awareness and best practices in workplace health.
  • Collaboration: Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, including HR, safety officers, and external agencies, to support the overall health and well-being of the workforce.
  • Research and Development: Engage in research activities to advance the field of occupational medicine, contribute to publications, and participate in professional development opportunities.
  • Compliance and Reporting: Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, maintain accurate records, and prepare reports as needed for internal and external stakeholders.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Primary medical qualification MFOM/ FFOM (or equivalent)
  • GMC Registration as an Occupational Health Specialist holding a current full licence to practice
  • If in training, to be eligible for entry onto the GMC Specialist Register (within 6 months from the date of the AAC)

Desirable

  • Additional higher degree e.g., MSc in Occupational Medicine

Work experience

Essential

  • Evidence of experience in Occupational Medicine in both NHS (or equivalent healthcare) and Non-NHS organisations
  • Evidence of ability to practice independently and manage complex cases

Desirable

  • Evidence of wide experience within the specialty e.g., diagnosis and management of occupational diseases, running case conferences, appointed doctor work
  • In depth skills in infection control, public health and mental health related work

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • Evidence of leadership/project management
  • Evidence of effective administrative and time management skills
  • Evidence of significant contribution to successful teamwork
  • Appointed doctor status
  • Excellent spoken and written English. Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills

  • Evidence of effective and sustained contribution to clinical governance, clinical risk management and clinical audit activities
  • Evidence of engagement in critical appraisal, journal clubs, contribution to published articles

Desirable

  • Evidence of completed quality improvement project work

  • Certificate of supervisor training
  • Documented audit outcomes with change in practice and completion of the audit loop
