Locum Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery

We are inviting applications for a full time Locum Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic surgery with an interest in lower limb arthroplasty.

The is a fixed term post until the 30th of September 2025 with the potential to increase while we recruit to this post substantively.

Main duties of the job

This post arises to cover substantial workload in trauma and the backfill of elective lists in ESEOC. The Trust has also recognised the need to increase our Trauma provision to optimise the care for some of our most vulnerable patients. Colchester has a busy Accident and Emergency department and with it brings a lot of complex lower limb trauma.

The post-holder will be expected to work within and help develop lower limb service. They will be required to work in collaboration with the wider MDT.

This role involves a one in 12 on calls (adult and paediatric trauma). They will be expected to deal with the general trauma as well as subspecialty trauma including periprosthetic fractures.

Job responsibilities

The key duties and responsibilities are:

  • General responsibilities including participation in Consultant on call rota

  • Clinical and other administration as required by agreement
  • Teaching and training of junior staff and undergraduates
  • Participation in Clinical Governance

The appointee will be expected to undertake take part in the 1:12 (weekday and weekend) Consultant On-Call rota.

Person Specification
  • Full GMC registration
  • FRCS(Tr&Orth) or Equivalent
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining
  • Ability to work in a team.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other agencies.
  • Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional, or national levels.
  • Educational/Clinical Supervisor (the necessary training will be provided for applicants that have not undertaken these roles previously)
  • Enquiring, critical approach to work.
  • Recognised fellowship training in knee arthroplasty including revisions
  • Management training and experience
  • Evidence of service improvement
  • Academic experience to set up academic programme
  • Evidence of participation in medical education
  • Ability to fulfil out of hour duties in a timely manner
