Job description

The post holder will hold a post of Fixed Term Consultant in Geriatric Medicine at London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust. Our collective goal is to provide excellent care for our frail older patients in hospital and back home. We aim to treat acute illness appropriately, enhance quality of life, reduce disability, recognize when life is nearing its end, and provide individualised, person-centred care in the right setting at the right time.

The appointee will be responsible to the Divisional Director of Medicine for London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust and report to the Department of Medicine for Older People Clinical Lead. As the post holder develops their role, there will be an expectation that different aspects of supporting professional activity may demand a greater proportion of the working job plan be dedicated to this. This will be addressed through regular appraisal and job planning.

The department is strongly supportive of any candidate for this post who wishes to pursue portfolio pathway training with a view to gaining a Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR).

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Provide in-patient care for patients on the Medicine for Older People wards at Ealing Hospital.
  2. Work in the frailty unit, focusing on comprehensive geriatric assessment for older people presenting to the Emergency Department with frailty syndromes not requiring admission.
  3. Contribute to outpatient care in clinics, including movement disorder and general rapid access clinics for people with frailty syndromes.
  4. GIM on call as detailed above.
  5. Support clinical governance activities, including morbidity and mortality meetings, quality improvement projects, and clinical audits.
  6. Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, training, and supervision.
  7. Contribute to service development where relevant.
  8. Liaise with and teach nursing staff, healthcare assistants, therapists, and other multidisciplinary team members.

London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust (LNWH) cares for the people of Brent, Ealing, Harrow, and beyond. Our team of over 8,200 clinical and support staff serve a diverse population of nearly one million people. We operate major acute services at:

  • Northwick Park Hospital: home to one of the busiest emergency departments (A&E) in the country, providing a full range of services including the country's top-rated hyper-acute stroke unit and one of only three hyper-acute rehabilitation units in the UK.
  • St Mark's Hospital: an internationally renowned specialist centre for bowel disease.
  • Ealing Hospital: a busy district general hospital with a 24/7 emergency department and urgent care centre, and specialist care at Meadow House Hospice.
  • Central Middlesex Hospital: our planned care site, hosting surgical and outpatient services and collocated with an urgent care centre.

We are a university teaching NHS trust, playing an important role in training future clinicians and advancing research for public benefit.
