Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust seeks a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia. The role involves delivering high-quality clinical care, participating in multi-disciplinary teams, and contributing to departmental development. Applicants should have relevant clinical training, full GMC registration, and a commitment to continuous learning.
The post will encompass clinical sessions in both Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia across all three sites. On call work will be in Intensive Care only with 2 Consultant Intensivists and 2 Consultant Anaesthetists on call across the county at any one time. There will be an even split between the Worcester and Alexandra Intensive Care Units. Further details are specified in the person specification below.
Main duties of the job
The suitably experienced post holder will be expected to provide a clinical service in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia to the patients of Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and to General Practitioners.
The successful candidate will be expected to work within multi-disciplinary teams to provide high quality clinical care. This includes leading multi-disciplinary ward rounds, formulating and communicating suitable treatment plans, teaching, supervising and liaising with colleagues and services both locally and externally to facilitate the care of the critically ill patient. They must ensure comprehensive handover of care.
The post holder will be required to participate in the on-call rota and when on call, is required to be no more than 30 minutes travel time from the on-call site.
In addition to clinical duties, the post holder will be expected to participate in continuing professional development, appraisal, the job planning process, teaching and training, clinical audit and the clinical governance processes within the department and Trust. There is also an expectation that the successful candidate will actively contribute to the continuing development of the department.

Job description
Job responsibilities
A formal job plan will be agreed between the post-holder and their Clinical Director and Divisional Medical Director, on behalf of the Chief Medical Officer, three months after the start date of the post. Clinical activity will be delivered in a 6-week cycle, with one week of Intensive Care every 6 weeks. Sessions in Anaesthesia will be based the clinical need of the department at the time. These may include major general/gynaecology/urology including robotic assisted surgery, trauma and orthopaedic surgery and CEPOD emergency list work. An example job plan timetable is shown below.
The Job Plan is subject to annual review and will be a prospective agreement that sets out a consultants duties, responsibilities and objectives for the coming year, covering all aspects of professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities. It will provide an agreed schedule of commitments, both internal and external. In addition, it will include personal objectives, including details of their link to wider service objectives, and details of the support, if any, required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan and the objectives.
The job plan will predominantly offer fixed clinical activity. It is possible to consider a proportion of flexible clinical activity. Alternatively, an annualised flexible element to the job plan may be employed. We currently have consultants in the department who work part of their job plan for the Pre Hospital Emergency Medicine services under a negotiated service level agreement, and we are happy to discuss similar arrangements for new consultants. Annual leave is managed on an annualised basis.
Provisional Assessment of Programmed Activities in Job Plan:
Direct clinical care:
8 PAs per week to include clinical activity, clinical related activity, predictable and unpredictable on call. Cross-site travel time is included in each session of direct clinical care.
Supporting Professional Activities:
2 SPAs per week to support your CPD and revalidation related activities.
Additional PA allocations are provided for leadership roles, educational supervision, governance roles, being an appraiser or other pre-agreed additional activities.
On call: 2 PA on call allowance and category A 3% on call availability supplement. Rota frequency is 1:9. The successful applicant will be expected to participate in the countywide Intensive Care on call rota. The on-call responsibility involves both predictable and unpredictable elements. It is expected that at weekends, the predictable element will involve attendance at morning handover and the undertaking of twice daily ward rounds, then on call from home.
