Job description
Overview

Blackpool Teaching Hospital has a purpose-built critical care unit with 16 single rooms and a team of 12 consultants, supported by 2 tiers of resident medical staff and a comprehensive allied health team. The unit includes a critical care follow-up service and an associated critical care outreach service, with a tradition of point of care ultrasound and opportunities for teaching across critical care, anaesthesia and medical trainees. There are extensive teaching activities for Foundation doctors, medical students and ACCPs, with an established teaching program supported by the Medical Education team.

The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary environment within a teaching hospital that hosts students from multiple universities and offers broad opportunities for postgraduate training and trainer development.

Responsibilities
  • The contract will be a 10 PA contract; extra DCC sessions are negotiable. Direct clinical care sessions are delivered on an annualised sessional contract. Consultants work in blocks from 8am to 8pm. Overnight, a trainee from both tiers is resident to provide cover to the Critical Care unit and respond to referrals from wards, theatres and the Emergency Department.
  • Job plans will be formally reviewed within the first 6 months and agreed according to actual activity. All consultants will be allocated 1.5 core SPA per week for CPD. Core SPA time is generally undertaken within the Trust; any variation must be discussed and agreed within the Consultant Job Plan.
  • Additional SPA time may be allocated based on evidenced need, to be reviewed by the Head of Department during the Job Plan review.
  • Participation in education and supervision of medical and non-medical staff (e.g., ACCP), including providing education on a rota, assessments and feedback.
  • Participation in data collection for ICNARC and involvement in mortality reviews, with appropriate communication and reporting to medical examiners and the coroner.
  • Contributing to the critical care service governance framework: attending unit governance and directorate meetings, and participating in QA, research and audit activity, including handling complaints.
Person Specification
  • Essential: Inclusion on the Specialist Register or eligible within 6 months of interview; Full GMC registration.
  • Essential: MB ChB or equivalent; FFICM and MRCP or FRCA; Higher degree (MD/PhD) Desirable.
  • Essential: Awareness of NHS organisation and values; understanding of management responsibilities of NHS consultants; participation in management training.
  • Essential: Commitment to CPD and clinical governance; evidence of self-directed research; publications in peer-reviewed journals desirable.
  • Essential: Excellent communication and teaching skills; ability to organise, prioritise and supervise; leadership and change management abilities; ability to motivate a multidisciplinary team.
  • Desirable: Computer/IT skills; educational qualifications or progression.
