The role involves providing clinical advice, managing urgent samples, and participating in audits. The Trust offers a supportive environment with opportunities for teaching and collaboration with various medical teams.
Triple West Medical has been appointed by an NHS organization in SW Scotland to recruit a Consultant in Infectious Diseases. The position is available as a substantive post or a locum fixed-term contract for a minimum of 12 months.
The NHS Trust serves a population of around 350,000 across multiple sites, with over 8,000 staff. It is located in Scotland's southwest region, near scenic coastlines and close to Glasgow. The Trust supports an active postgraduate program, and consultants are encouraged to participate in teaching specialty trainees.
The department currently has a single duty consultant daily, providing clinical advice via phone and email, managing urgent clinical samples. When off duty, consultants share responsibilities in clinical liaison, infection prevention, diagnostic and antimicrobial stewardship, and support to laboratory staff and infection control teams.
The service has shifted towards a clinically-oriented approach. Laboratory reporting is primarily handled by Lead Scientists and Advanced Practitioners. Consultants liaise with clinicians, hospital staff, GPs, and health protection specialists regarding diagnosis, management, and infection control.
The department maintains strong links with critical care, including daily ICU rounds and weekly MDT meetings. They conduct infection ward rounds, C. difficile and S. aureus bacteraemia reviews, and biweekly medical HDU rounds. Multidisciplinary meetings for orthopaedic infections and tuberculosis are also held regularly.
Participation in laboratory and clinical audits is expected. The appointee will advise on clinical guidelines, investigation protocols, laboratory SOPs, and antimicrobial use.
The Infection Prevention and Control team comprises a Director, senior ICNs, clinical leads, infection control nurses, a business manager, administrative staff, and a data analyst.
