Main duties of the job

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is the 8th largest hospital Trust in the country and a major national centre of teaching and research.

This 12 month locum post is an exciting opportunity to join the dynamic Haematology Team at UHS. We are looking for a team player with an interest in laboratory haematology, myeloma and myeloid disorders, with an enthusiasm for developing the haematology diagnostic services at UHS including the regional SI-HMDS.

You will work as part of both the laboratory haematology and myeloma and myeloid teams alongside other clinical colleagues with specialist interests and clinical scientists involved in the diagnosis of haematological malignancies. An interest in education and training would also be welcomed.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

You will be expected to actively participate as a member of the UHS Haematology team, with a specific focus on laboratory haematology, myeloma and myeloid disorders.

Within The Haematology Laboratory Team

  • Oversee laboratory reporting of blood films, bone marrow aspirates and trephine biopsies and other diagnostic specimens as appropriate
  • Oversee SI-HMDS reporting of haematological malignancies in collaboration with other consultants, clinical scientists and biomedical scientists
  • Supervision and training of junior medical staff, clinical scientists and biomedical scientists in laboratory medicine and SI-HMDS reporting
  • Attendance at diagnostic and clinical management MDT meetings
  • Active involvement in the development of the SI-HMDS service

Within The UHS Myeloma And Myeloid Teams

  • Management of patients with myeloma and myeloid disorders in the day case and outpatient setting.
  • To discuss cases as appropriate at the Southampton leukaemia and myeloma MDTs
  • Active involvement in the recruitment and management of patients within clinical trials

Within The UHS Haematology Service

  • Undertaking the triage of new referrals and advice and guidance to primary care and the wider trust
  • Active involvement in the teaching of junior doctors and undergraduates

Interactions With Other Departments

  • Contributing to the development of referral and diagnostic pathways both for primary care and the wider hospital.
  • Contributing to the non-resident out of hours consultant cover for combined haemato-oncology and general haematology

Interaction Within The Region

  • Active collaboration with other colleagues in the region through MDT and network wide working
  • Development of regional diagnostic and referral pathways in collaboration with other colleagues

Teaching And Training

  • Active involvement in co-ordination of teaching and training within the department is strongly encouraged as part of this role
  • All consultants are expected to actively participate in teaching and training of junior medical and nursing staff and allied health professionals
  • All consultants are expected to clinically supervise junior medical staff
  • Involvement in educational supervision is expected, subject to General Medical Council requirements

What We’re Looking For

  • MRCP and FRCPath (or equivalent)
  • An appropriate level of clinical experience and competence in clinical and laboratory haematology to practice independently at consultant level.

Individuals wishing to apply must be registered with the General Medical Council (GMC).

The successful candidate will be employed under the terms and conditions of service for Consultants (England) 2003.

Qualifications, Training & Experience

Essential criteria

  • Full GMC registration
  • MRCP and FRCPath (or equivalent)
  • Must be able to demonstrate an appropriate level of clinical experience and competence in clinical and laboratory haematology to practice independently at consultant level
  • Evidence of specific experience and/or training in myeloma and myeloid disorders
  • Experience in teaching and training undergraduate medical students and/or postgraduate doctors and other health professionals

Desirable criteria

  • CCT (haematology) or within 6 months of obtaining CCT on date of interview
  • Recognised educational supervisor training
  • Higher degree e.g. MD/PhD
  • Evidence of service improvement project

Aptitudes and skills

Essential criteria

  • Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English)
  • Evidence of collaborative working within and between organisations
  • Competence with information technology including remote working

Desirable criteria

  • Publications relating to haematology
