A prominent healthcare trust is seeking a Locum Consultant in Gynaecology to work at Musgrove Park Hospital. This full-time position involves high-standard diagnostic services and collaboration with sub-specialist oncologists. Candidates must have GMC registration and qualifications in obstetrics and gynaecology. We are looking for a Locum Consultant in Gynaecology with a special interest in hysteroscopy, colposcopy, and vulval disease. The post is based at Musgrove Park Hospital and involves working with the Gynaecological Oncology Team as a Diagnostic Lead Gynaecology Consultant in the Department of Gynaecological Oncology.
The position is full time (10 PA) on a 12-month fixed-term contract with a 1:12 on-call commitment. A flexible job plan is available for the right candidate. The post is available from 1 September 2025.
GMC specialist registration is essential. If you do not hold GMC specialist registration and are not pending a CCT/ARCP/CESR outcome, the role will be converted to a Specialist contract with NHS Employers terms and conditions.
The successful candidate will have joint accreditation in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (RCOG) and in Colposcopy (BSCCP) and should have either a SITM in gynaecological oncology and/or vulval disease by commencement, with other relevant evidence considered (e.g. advanced outpatient hysteroscopy).
Provide high-standard diagnostic services for patients referred through the two-week-wait rapid access pathway, supporting sub-specialist gynaecological oncologists, and managing the pre-cancer diagnostic workload in collaboration with senior nurses and trainees. Fulfill duties and responsibilities as outlined in the Job Plan and Terms and Conditions, subject to manager agreement.
On-call commitments include 1:12 night-time on call for general gynaecology, plus a regular daytime session covering emergency gynaecology. In the absence of colleagues on leave, provide agreed levels of cover according to the Trust policy.
External duties may be included in the Job Plan with prior notification to the clinical manager; scheduling will be by agreement. Where emergency work occurs, scheduling will be incorporated into the Job Plan schedule.

The candidate will join an established team of three sub-specialist Gynaecological Oncology Consultants, alongside an Obstetrics and Gynaecology department with colleagues specializing in Urogynaecology, Menstrual Dysfunction, Minimal Access Surgery, Fetal Medicine, Maternal Medicine, and Diabetes.
The Trust has merged with Yeovil District Hospital, expanding cross-county services. There may be opportunities for extension to a permanent position following the initial maternity locum for the right candidate.
The Somerset Gynaecological Cancer Centre includes a multidisciplinary team with input from oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, and clinical nurses. The post will involve a 3 fixed main theatre lists over a 12-week rota, with additional flexible sessions for leave cover, a 3-day surgery list per 12 weeks, and involvement in colposcopy, PMB/hysteroscopy clinics, and PMB service leadership and audit (deputy Cervical Screening Provider Lead).
