Job summary

East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust is expanding its General Surgery department and seeks a proactive individual to join their team. The role involves day-to-day management, teaching, and active participation in clinical governance, aiming to improve service delivery and patient outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register or eligible within 6 months.
  • Postgraduate degree related to General Surgery is desirable.
  • Extensive experience in General Surgery and Colorectal Surgery.

Responsibilities

  • Shared responsibility for daily management of the General Surgery service.
  • Teaching and training within the multidisciplinary service.
  • Active involvement in clinical governance activities.

Job description

The successful applicants will be offered the opportunity to work closely with the existing surgical consultants in the Trust to provide a high standard of care across the Trust.

Person Specification

Qualifications / Training

Essential

  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register or, be within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview or, provide GMC confirmed eligibility for entry on the Specialist Register
  • MBChB (or equivalent) qualification
  • FRCS (or equivalent) qualification
  • Licence to practice

Desirable

  • Postgraduate degree (or equivalent) related to General Surgery (eg Masters / MD / MRes / PhD etc)

Previous Experience

Essential

  • Wide range of experience in General Surgery
  • Demonstrable training in Colorectal Surgery
  • Experience of supervising undergraduates, doctors in training, and other colleagues
  • Ability to offer and be accountable for full and independent diagnostic opinion, and to be able to take full responsibility for independent management of patients
  • Can evidence leading on patient safety issues and achieving a change in practice
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of audit, evidence based practice, and clinical quality improvement initiatives
  • Demonstrable experience and participation in research

Desirable

  • Experience of General Surgery in UK Major Hospital
  • Demonstrable General Surgery consultant level experience
  • Evidence of independent lower gastrointestinal endoscopy practice
  • Published papers and original work in peer reviewed journals

Skills and knowledge

Essential

  • Able to evidence engagement with clinical governance and the identification of errors and the learning from errors
  • Evidence of engagement with appraisal and revalidation
