NHS Scotland is seeking Locum Consultants in General Surgery for 12-month posts aimed at addressing surgical waiting times. The successful candidates will join a team of experienced surgeons and will be integral to both emergency and elective surgery commitments at major hospitals, including University Hospital Crosshouse and University Hospital Ayr.

Locum posts for Consultants in General Surgery for 12 months are required as part of an initiative to address waiting times for surgery and outpatient clinic consultations. The successful applicants will have a subspecialty interest that complement those of the department. Experience in general and emergency surgery will be essential.
The successful applicants will join the current team of 21 Consultant General Surgeons in NHSAA. The post-holders will be based either at University Hospital Crosshouse (UHC), where they will contribute to the emergency on-call rota for general surgery on a 1 in 12 basis, or at University Hospital Ayr (UHA) where the emergency rota commitment is on a 1 in 8 basis. Elective commitments may be job planned at either of these two acute sites or at community hospital sites including East Ayrshire Community Hospital, Cumnock or Ayrshire Central Hospital, Irvine.
The department is currently trying to address service demands brought by the coronavirus pandemic, whilst trying to improve service quality, all in a way that is sustainable for both organisation and individual consultants.
UHC is a large 539 bedded district general hospital was opened in 1982, and has been expanded and upgraded regularly since. The majority of services in the major specialities are provided at the hospital, as well as Ayrshire-wide services in resectional Upper GI Surgery, laparoscopic and robotoic Colorectal Surgery, Breast Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Laboratory Medicine, Renal Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Dermatology, ENT (including the Scottish National Cochlear Implant Centre), Maxillo-Facial Surgery, Gynaecology and Obstetrics.
UHA is a 343-bedded general hospital located to the south east of Ayr town and opened in 1991 and has been subject to regular upgrade and extension. UHA has a 24-hour consultant led Emergency Department and hosts emergency receiving services for acute medicine, general surgery and urology. There is an Interventional Radiology service on site and substantial elective orthopaedic and ophthalmology services. UHA is also the Centre for Bariatric Surgery within NHSAA.
The Terms and Conditions of Service are those determined by the New Consultant Contract (Scotland) 2004 and the post is offered on a 10 programmed activity basis, although opportunities may exist for Extra Programmed Activities subject to service requirements. Applications from individuals who may wish to work on a part-time or job share basis will be considered.
Applicants will be appropriately experienced and hold full registration and licence to practice with the General Medical Council. The successful candidate will have previous experience working at, or near, consultant level in the NHS or a comparable healthcare system.
