Job description

The successful candidate will join a well-established team within one of our specialties: Respiratory, Care of the Older Person, or Endocrinology & Diabetes Consultants, enhancing services for Blackpool, Fylde, and Wyre residents at Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

The post holder will be employed by Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and will be responsible for approximately 15 acute hospital inpatients, inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient clinics, and on-call duties for general medicine. Outpatient work will primarily be conducted through the outpatient department at Victoria Hospital, supporting 5 new patients and 10 follow-ups, with a team supported by 1 junior or middle grade doctor.

The candidate will advise colleagues on measures to prevent unnecessary hospital admissions and facilitate timely discharges from secondary care.

Main duties of the job

Support the General Medical Wards as a Lead Clinician across the Integrated Medicine and Patient Flow Division. Opportunities exist to support within specialties such as Respiratory, Diabetes and Endocrinology, Care of the Older Person, or Infectious Diseases.

Formed in 2021 following a Trust restructure, our division provides high-quality emergency medical care through our Emergency Department, Acute Medical Unit, and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC). We oversee inpatient and outpatient care across specialties including general medicine, diabetes and endocrinology, geriatrics, stroke, respiratory medicine, rheumatology, and dermatology. We also operate Clifton Hospital, a rehabilitation facility, and our Community Frailty Team. Currently undergoing transformation with the construction of an Emergency Village, we offer many opportunities to support service improvements within Integrated Medicine and Patient Flow.

Person Specification
Education and Qualification
  • Full registration with the GMC, primary medical qualification, MRCP or equivalent.
Desirable
  • MD, PhD, or other relevant qualifications; Entry on the Specialist Register or within six months of CCT in general medicine; Management training.
Experience and Knowledge
  • Broad exposure to General Medicine and related specialties.
Desirable
  • Interest in additional specialty areas.
Research / Audit / Publications
  • Ability to supervise audits, understanding of research principles, regular audit attendance.
Desirable
  • Recent research/publications, active involvement in audits.
Skills and Ability
