Job overview
The CYP Havens service provides expert physical and mental health care and support to children and their carers affected by sexual abuse. The main responsibility of the post-holder is to provide paediatric expertise during out-of-hours paediatric forensic medical examinations of victims of sexual abuse aged 0-12 years, and 13-19 years if there are additional needs.
The role involves liaising with other health, social services, police, and agencies related to children seen in the Havens. The post-holder will decide on arranging forensic examinations and provide out-of-hours advice to partnership agencies across London. The examinations are detailed consultations requiring expertise in holistic care, including assessments of health, development, sexual health, and injuries. Standards include precise documentation, preventing DNA contamination, safeguarding adherence, and referral writing. The post may also involve attending court to give evidence, including providing Witness Statements.
The post-holder will offer expert advice regarding children with sexual abuse allegations and provide paediatric input during forensic examinations for children under 13 or under 18 with additional needs. Immediate responses to police inquiries about forensic examinations are required. Examinations are mainly conducted at the Havens but may be performed elsewhere in emergencies, such as hospitals.
The on-call rota operates Monday to Friday evenings and nights (17:00-09:00) and all day on weekends and bank holidays (09:00-09:00). The post involves 3-4 shifts per month, including at least one weekend. Weekend-only work requests will be considered.
Attendance at a minimum of 4 peer review meetings annually, along with supervision and training, is expected, managed alongside other commitments.
The Havens is London’s Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC), provided by King’s College Hospital and operating from three sites: Camberwell, Whitechapel, and St Charles Hospital, Ladbroke Grove. The service is commissioned by NHS England and MOPAC, offering 24/7 forensic medical examinations for police and self-referred clients. Additional services include follow-up medical and sexual health care, ISVA, counseling, and psychology support, with a dedicated children’s team.
