Locum Consultant in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia

The advertised post as for one Locum Consultant Anaesthetists with a special interest in Cardiothoracic and General Anaesthesia.

In October 2014, NHS England approved the case for change for the way that specialist cardiovascular services are provided across north and east London, enabling the creation of the Barts Heart Centre. The Barts Heart Centre was created by combining the services and staff from the London Chest Hospital and UCLH's The Heart Hospital, along with those already running at St Bartholomew's. The aspiration is very much for it to develop into more than the sum of its parts.

Barts Heart Centre performs more heart surgery, HAC PCIs, MRI and CT scans than any other centre in the world. It is Europe's largest specialised cardiovascular centre, covering a population of three million people across north and east London, west Essex and beyond. It brings together a wide range of expertise in clinical care, research and education for cardiovascular conditions. It also creates the world's biggest centre of excellence for adults with congenital heart disease. The Thorax Centre provides multi-disciplinary care for patients with lung disease.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidates will be appointed on a 10 programmed activity contract comprising 9.0 DCC and 1.0 SPA. The on call frequency is 1:10 covering theatre and cath lab emergencies.

This is subject to negotiation with the successful candidate, in terms of timing and content of sessions, subject to a maximum of 10 PAs.

The list of duties will be altered to reflect changing needs of the post, subject to negotiation. It should be recognized that the job description reflects the core activity of the post at a particular time, as the department and individual develop there would inevitably be changes in the emphasis of the duties of the post. If changes to a job become significant, the lead clinician and the post-holder would review the job description formally

Special Knowledge/Abilities and/or Experience

Essential

  • Proficient in relevant procedures such as vascular access, fibreoptic bronchoscopy
  • Advanced transoesophageal echocardiography skills
  • Higher training in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Critical Care, at least 6 months.
  • Training and experience in cardiac critical care
  • Experience in the perioperative care of patients including pain management

Desirable

  • Sound understanding of training relationships within the programme
  • Ability to promote equality of opportunity in all aspects of medical education
  • Experience working across boundaries (e.g. betweenalties, local and national education providers, and across professional groups
  • TOE/TTE Accreditation

Teaching & Training

Essential

  • Involvement in teaching junior medical staff, nurses and allied health professionals
  • Evidence of training in teaching skills

Desirable

  • CALS, ATLS, ALS, APLS or PALS instructor status
  • Certificate of education
  • Involvement in undergraduate education
