Job description

Locum Consultant in Anaesthetics & Critical Care

Applications are invited for the post of Locum Consultant Anaesthetist (with an interest in Critical Care). This post is for 10 Programmed Activities (PAs). The post will be a fixed-term 6-month contract to support the provision of anaesthetic and critical care services at The Christie.

This role would be ideal for consultants with a Dual CCT in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine (or equivalent). However, we would also consider applicants with a single CCT in Anaesthesia (or equivalent), who can demonstrate relevant intensive care medicine training or experience, in accordance with guidance set out in "Critical Staffing: A best practice framework for safe and effective critical care staffing" as published by the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine.

Main duties of the job

To contribute to the provision of consultant-led anaesthesia and critical care services, supporting a range of oncological specialties at The Christie. The post holder will do sessions in anaesthesia for oncological surgery and radiotherapy, and provide daytime sessions and on-call cover for the oncological critical care unit (OCCU). The OCCU is an 8-bedded unit providing Level 2 and Level 3 support for patients under oncology, haematology, and those undergoing major surgery.

The job plan includes 7.5 PAs for Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 2.5 PAs for Supporting Programmed Activities (SPA). The on-call commitment is 1:8, solely for critical care. There is a separate theatre on-call rota for emergency surgery.

On appointment, the successful candidate will review and agree a job plan with the Joint Clinical Directors for Anaesthesia and Critical Care, in collaboration with the Directorate Operations Manager.

Job responsibilities

This post is supported by 25 other consultants, including eight contributing to critical care. The team includes nine resident specialty doctors, supported by trainees, a clinical fellow, and an Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP). The post holder will share responsibility for patient care and administrative duties, following Trust policies and procedures.

The Trust supports Continuing Professional Development (CPD) with time and financial support, aligned with GMC and royal college requirements.

Job planning will be collaboratively reviewed annually, with initial discussions within the first six months. The job plan may be adjusted based on service needs and professional development goals.

Mandatory training must be maintained at all times, using allocated SPA time for completion.

The indicative timetable includes 0.25 SPA to support appraisal and supervision, either as an appraiser or supervisor.

  • Full GMC registration with a valid license to practice

  • Member of a medical indemnity organisation
  • FRCA or equivalent
  • ALS
  • FFICM recognition
  • FFICM, EDIC or equivalent
  • Extended complementary skills, e.g., Echo/US accreditation
Experience
  • Evidence of smooth progression through training
  • Higher training in relevant surgical and intensive care fields
  • Ability to manage risk and end-of-life decisions
  • Experience or training in intensive care medicine
