Locum Consultant in Anaesthetics & Critical Care

Applications are invited for the post of Locum Consultant Anaesthetist (with an interest in Critical Care). This post is for 10 Programmed Activities (PAs). The post will be a fixed-term 6-month contract to support the provision of anaesthetic and critical care services at The Christie.

This role is ideal for consultants with a Dual CCT in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine (or equivalent). We will also consider applicants with a single CCT in Anaesthesia (or equivalent) who can demonstrate relevant intensive care training or experience, in accordance with guidance published by the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine.

Main duties of the job

The post involves contributing to consultant-led anaesthesia and critical care services supporting various oncological specialties at The Christie. Responsibilities include anaesthesia for oncological surgery and radiotherapy, daytime sessions, and on-call cover for the oncological critical care unit (OCCU), an 8-bedded unit providing Level 2 and 3 support for oncology, haematology, and major surgery patients.

The job plan comprises 7.5 PAs for Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 2.5 PAs for Supporting Programmed Activities (SPA). The on-call commitment is 1:8, exclusively for critical care, with a separate rota for emergency surgery.

On appointment, the candidate will review and agree on a job plan with the Joint Clinical Directors for Anaesthesia and Critical Care, in collaboration with the Directorate Operations Manager.

Job responsibilities

The post is supported by 25 other consultants, including critical care contributors, resident doctors, a clinical fellow, and an Advanced Clinical Practitioner. The successful candidate will share responsibility for patient care, work with local managers and colleagues, and adhere to policies and procedures of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust.

CPD is supported according to GMC and royal college guidelines, with time and financial support provided.

Job planning is flexible and reviewed annually, with initial discussions within the first six months. Mandatory training must be maintained, and a timetable will be provided on commencement. All new consultants must have 0.25 SPAs to support appraisal and supervision, either as an appraiser or supervisor.
