There are 3 areas of work within the post, AAU ward, Ambulatory care and Hot post taking.
Each of the AAU wards has a dedicated consultant Monday - Friday who will do a full ward round each morning following medical handover, with a team of 3-5 resident doctors on each ward. You will cover part or full weeks on the ward with a morning ward round followed by the MDT board round and an afternoon review with the team.
The Ambulatory Care service has a consultant of the day; working 9-5 leading the team assessing new patients referred from a variety of sources from ED, 111, GPs and follow up from Acute Medicine discharges. The consultant holds the referrals phone as the single point of contact for the AEC and medical take to facilitate a streamlined advice service and guide acutely unwell patients to the appropriate area of the hospital. There is a twice daily board round where all patients seen are discussed and the service uses a shared electronic live board to facilitate real time demand and capacity sharing across the Emergency Department.
The Hot take is currently a 6 hour 2-8pm shift reviewing new admissions who are being seen by the on call team of resident doctors. Successful recruitment would add a 4 hour morning post take session bringing our capacity to 10 hours post taking each weekday.
The weekend work is covered by a larger cohort of GIM accredited consultants who work across the EIM, including cardiologists, gastroenterologists, respiratory physicians and elderly care (COOP) consultants. The Acute Medicine consultants form a large proportion of this rota as their GIM commitment. Your post would include the GIM on call rota component.
The Acute Medicine Consultant Rota is a flexible rota written around the requirements of the individual and we are exploring an AI personalised rota going forward to best map to each members needs.
Outside the immediate clinical duties, you will be expected to provide bedside teaching to both medical students on the ward and resident doctors, support their learning through formal feedback via their eportfolios and other assessments and participate in governance activities and QI within the department. We have a robust leadership team who are keen to support you in achieving your own development goals and welcome innovation and change within the service.
