Locum Consultant General Surgeon with an interest in Upper GI

Indicative Duties Clinical The clinical commitments of this post will include responsibility for undertaking elective and emergency general surgery at Blackpool Teaching Hospital. The post holder will also be expected to perform a wide range of laparoscopic and open surgical procedures. Indicative Work Plan Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday am Ward round/SPA Theatre DCC Administration DCC SpA pm OPC DCC Theatre DCC Endoscopy DCC Xray Meeting The Surgical Unit has seen a change in the theatre schedule, were practicable, the same anaesthetic is scheduled to work with the same surgeon throughout the full theatre lists. Morning operating theatres lists start at 8.00am and are scheduled to finish at 5.30 pm. Morning OPD clinics start at 9am usually finishing at 1pm. Afternoon OPD clinics start at 1.30pm usually finishing at 5.30 pm. The Trust operates a Surgeon of the Week on-call model, which means that the same surgeon is on-call for the following time periods. The ON CALL works on a 1 in 10 basis. The surgeon on call covers the weekend and hand over on Monday morning to another colleague who continues the on-call for the rest of the week, when this surgeon covers the day for a period of 12 hours. The night cover is done in turn by colleagues. Friday 8am Monday 8am Monday 8am Friday 8am (separated from weekend on-call period) A weekday night on-call schedule occurs for the four weekday nights from 8pm 8am Consultants have no responsibility for any other clinical commitments during their on-call week, enabling all time to be spent undertaking the management of emergency patients, reviewing patients admitted in both the Surgical Assessment Unit, emergency wards and undertaking non-elective surgery. Indicative Job Plan This job description contains an indicative and proposed job plan to allow you to start work. Within 3 months you and your clinical manager will have agreed a prospective Job Plan that sets out your main duties and responsibilities, a schedule for carrying out your Programmed Activities, your managerial responsibilities, your accountability arrangements, your objectives and supporting resources. You and your clinical manager will review the Job Plan annually in line with the provisions in Schedule 3 of the Terms and Conditions of the New Consultant Contract (England) 2003. Either may propose amendment of the job plan. You will help ensure through participating in Job Plan reviews that your Job Plan meets the criteria set out in the Terms and Conditions and that it contributes to the efficient and effective use of NHS resources. The job plan includes 8.5 programmed activities for direct clinical care and on-call duties and 1.5 programmed activities for supporting professional activities. There are therefore 10 programmed activities in total. Non-fixed half days include clinical assessment of ward referrals / administration / audit / CME / research and teaching. On call is Category B on a 1 in 10 rota giving a 3% uplift in salary.
