Job overview

We are seeking to recruit a Locum Consultant Paediatrician at Epsom General Hospital to support the delivery of paediatric services across North Surrey. This fixed-term post has been created to provide cover following consultant retirements, with the intention of recruiting to a substantive position in the future.

The successful applicant will be primarily based at Epsom General Hospital, although cross-site working may be required to meet service needs. Epsom Hospital provides an integrated paediatric service, with acute and community teams working closely together to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care.

The post holder will contribute to the acute paediatric service, including participation in the Consultant of the Week rota, inpatient ward rounds and the consultant on-call rota. They will also undertake neurodevelopmental and general paediatric outpatient clinics, supporting children and young people with a broad range of health and developmental needs.

The successful applicant will join a supportive team of 16 Consultants and 2 Associate Specialists, supported by 9 middle-grade doctors and 8 junior doctors working across the Emergency Department, inpatient ward, day‑case unit and Special Care Baby Unit. The multidisciplinary team includes Clinical Nurse Specialists in Neurodevelopment, Neurodisability and Epilepsy.

3. To undertake duties as defined within the attached job plan in so far as practicable and in agreement with your Clinical Director.

4. To be responsible and managerially accountable for the reasonable and effective use of Trust resources that you use and influence, and professionally accountable to the Medical Director.

5. On commencement to ensure personal attendance at the Trust’s corporate Induction (or arranged Consultant Induction).

6. To participate in the Trust’s Statutory & Mandatory training programme.

7. To be responsible for the clinical management of out‑patients under your care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical Duties:
  • The post holder will deliver community paediatric clinics including neurodevelopmental clinics. The clinics will mainly be held at Epsom General Hospital within the children’s outpatient department. The successful applicant will also take part in the acute paediatric service, including consultant of the week attending on the wards and taking part in the on‑call rota. As part of their general paediatric role they will also run general clinics.

Specific Duties of this post:

  • acute paediatrics including attending on the ward (consultant of the week) and on‑call 1:9/10
  • monthly general paediatric clinic
  • developmental assessment in all paediatric age groups
  • assessment and management of specific neurodevelopmental conditions
  • supporting statutory work

Qualifications
  • Hold a medical qualification or qualification registered with the GMC
  • MRCPCH or equivalent
  • Entry onto the Specialist Register for GMC in paediatrics or be within six months of obtaining CCT
  • Level 3 child protection
  • APLS certification
  • NLS certification
  • Ability to effectively use a developmental assessment tool such as SOGS II
  • Qualified in ADOS or similar ASD assessment tool
Skills
  • Be able to demonstrate a high standard of clinical skill and expertise in a broad range of paediatrics, including general and acute paediatrics, developmental and community paediatrics.
  • Experience in developmental assessment, including specific neurodevelopmental assessments – ADHD, ASD, DCD.
