Job description
Locum Consultant Cardiothoracic Anaesthetist

The postholder will undertake anaesthetic duties in cardiothoracic theatres, cardiothoracic critical care and cardiology. The successful candidate will work a flexible, rolling rota with his cardiothoracic anaesthetic colleagues, and will participate in the on call rota.

Main duties of the job

This is a replacement appointment to join a dynamic team of specialised Cardiothoracic Anaesthetists at our tertiary centre. The successful candidate will be expected to deliver anaesthesiology for a wide range of cardiology and cardiothoracic procedures; trans-oesophageal echocardiography and will give direct care in the integrated cardiothoracic intensive care unit.

The successful application will be part of a 1:10 24/7 cardiothoracic on-call rota serving a population in excess of 1 million. We are ideally looking for an applicant with a wide range of anaesthetic and intensive care skills.

The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust was established in 1994 and is a major acute Trust providing a comprehensive range of services for the people of Wolverhampton, the wider Black Country, Staffordshire, North Worcestershire and Shropshire. It gained Cancer Centre status in 1997, was designated as the 4th Regional Heart & Lung Centre during 2004/05 and became one of the first wave Bowel Screening Centres in 2006. The Trust is the largest teaching hospital in the Black Country providing teaching and training to around 130 medical students on rotation from the University of Birmingham Medical School. Job responsibilities
  1. In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to provide a service in delivering cardiac and thoracic anaesthetic services.
  2. In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to play a full part in the out-of-hours On-Call service for the department. This includes being on-call for telephone advice and major incidents.
  3. To provide cover for Consultant and Senior colleagues in respect of periods of leave.
  4. In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to take part in medical audit and research as appropriate.
  5. In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to ensure that the requirements of clinical governance are met.
  6. To ensure that there are adequate arrangements for hospital staff involved in the care of your patients to be able to contact you when necessary. Junior Medical Staff
  7. In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to play a full part in the professional supervision and management of junior medical staff.
  8. In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to take responsibility for and devote time to teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required for junior medical staff.
  9. Management & Service Development: In conjunction with Divisional Manager, Consultant and Senior Colleagues, to take an active role in the management of the Division.
  10. In conjunction with the Divisional Manager, Consultant & Senior colleagues, to play a full part in developing & implementing new ways of working in line with modernisation principles and fit for the future.
  11. In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to take responsibility for the best use of departmental staffing and other resources to ensure the maximum efficiency of the department.
  12. To observe the Trusts agreed policies and procedures, in particular in relation to managing staff, and to follow the Trusts Standing Orders and Standing Financial Instructions. These policies and procedures have been drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters. Clinical Governance
  13. In conjunction with Consultant colleagues, to ensure that the requirements of clinical governance are met.
  14. Health & Safety: To take responsibility for your own Health & Safety complying with any safe working arrangements, policies and procedures which are in place.
  15. To accept a duty to other staff and patients to ensure that any hazards are reported and managed appropriately.
