Job description
Locum Consultant Cardiothoracic Anaesthetist

We are looking to welcome a Locum Consultant Cardiothoracic Anaesthetist to our cohesive and forward-looking department. The South West Cardiothoracic Centre, part of University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, provides cardiac and thoracic surgery for the South West Peninsula. The Thoracic Surgical Service was established in 1979, with the combined Cardiothoracic service opening in November 1997. The cardiac surgical arm delivers approximately 1000 cases per year.

University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust is the largest hospital in the Southwest Peninsula, offering a secondary care service to approximately 500 000 patients, and a tertiary care service to a further 1.5 million. It is the regional major trauma centre, with almost all adult surgical specialties are catered for including neurosurgery, and paediatrics in addition to cardiothoracics. The hospital is located on the Devon & Cornwall border with access to all the amenities of a metropolitan city, yet moments away from the moors and sea. Plymouth is described as Britain's ocean city, offering an excellent work-life balance and plenty of opportunity to make the most of the outdoors.

This post is advertised with a view to maintaining current levels of consultant staffing in coming years.

Main duties of the job

The post is that of a full time Locum Consultant Cardiothoracic Anaesthetist. Over an approximately eleven week cycle, one week will be spent as consultant in charge of the Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit. For the remaining weeks the job plan includes approximately 20 all day theatre lists per quarter. It is anticipated that operating lists will be divided appropriately between Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery dependent on the candidate's experience and the requirements of the Cardiothoracic Unit. All colleagues offer flexible cover for available lists as and when their non-clinical commitments allow.

The post-holder will be expected to work flexibly with the other consultants to provide the service to cardiac theatres and intensive care. The post-holder and other consultant colleagues will be expected to provide cover for each other's absences on annual or study leave, so far as is practicable, in accordance with the Trust additional activity work policy.

The post-holder will be expected to contribute significantly to the perioperative TOE service and provide support to the development of the surgical programme.

Participation in medical audit and continuing medical education is an expected part of the post as part of overall continuing professional development.

Job responsibilities

If a suitable candidate were appointed the job plan could be altered accordingly to suit the requirements of the post.

An illustrative job plan is included, which will be finalised after discussion with the service line director upon commencement of the post.
