Job description
Overview

The Harefield Hospital cardiology team is looking for a Locum Consultant specialising in Coronary Risk and Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH) Service, with potential for additional cardiology specialist activity depending on service requirements. The post holder will provide specialist cardiology services on the Harefield Hospital site, with possible duties across all Guy's and St Thomas' sites including the Royal Brompton. This post may close early if a sufficient number of applications have been received.

Main duties of the job

The job plan is anticipated to contain 10 programmed activities (PAs) per week to be negotiated between the consultant and the clinical director, and may be flexed to accommodate evolving clinical service requirements. The role includes work within the Coronary Risk and FH Service, covering all aspects of primary and secondary CVD risk prevention. Depending on the candidate, the role may involve additional cardiology specialist activity subject to further arrangements. Final confirmation of the proposed initial timetable will be completed prior to taking up the post.

Harefield Hospital (HH) is a regional centre for cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery and an international centre for adult heart and heart-lung transplantation. It provides a primary intervention service for acute coronary syndromes to selected Trusts and the London Ambulance Service in outer West London and the Home Counties. It has approximately 1,185 staff, 180 beds with five operating theatres and four catheter laboratories. The Trust comprises St Thomas’ Hospital, Evelina Children’s Hospital, Royal Brompton Hospital, Harefield Hospital and Guy’s Hospital, in London. Job responsibilities

Provide clinical services in Cardiology in accordance with clinical and legal requirements and the international role of the Trust.

Work within the Coronary Risk and FH Service; role may involve additional cardiology specialist activity subject to further arrangements.

Engage in clinical research in Coronary Risk Prevention/FH at a level in keeping with the 5* research rating of the National Heart & Lung Institute.

Supervise and deliver clinical and technical education in Coronary Risk Prevention/FH and maintain the international teaching profile of the Trust.

Provide clinical care for patients in the Cardiology Unit with emphasis on secondary and primary CVD prevention, FH and lipid management.

Provide care to both inpatients and outpatients to ensure high standards of diagnosis, treatment and care in a timely manner.

Participate in the Consultant of the week rota for cardiology in-patients.

Supervise, train and manage junior medical staff and research fellows to ensure high standards of clinical practice and efficient use of resources.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training: Essential

  • MRCP or equivalent qualification
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Entry on the Specialist Register as holding a CCT in Cardiology or equivalent
  • Full training in interventional cardiology

Clinical Experience: Essential

  • Expertise and experience in CVD risk prevention and FH management; interventional cardiology experience preferred, including treatment of acute myocardial infarction
  • Recent valid Advanced Life Support certificate
  • Participation in a recognised scheme of continuing medical education
  • Research experience with significant publications and conference contributions

Desirable

  • Teaching experience at national level
  • Sub-specialist interest within CVD risk prevention and FH management, +/- interventional cardiology

Knowledge and Skills: Essential

  • Solid knowledge of CVD risk prevention and FH management with invasive cardiology where applicable
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills in line with the Trust’s core behaviours
  • Computer literacy and IT skills
  • Ability to conduct research and teaching at national level
  • Knowledge of radiation protection in invasive cardiology
  • Evidence of participation in service improvement projects

Desirable

  • Experience of managing and developing a CVD risk prevention cardiology service
