University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Consultant in Burns and Plastic Surgery to join a well-established team delivering care across the Midlands Burns Service. The post is based at the adult burns centre and involves paediatric burns management at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, with opportunities to subspecialise in plastic surgery.

The appointee will participate in a 1:7 burns on-call rota across QEHB and BCH, and will be part of the Burns MDT.

• Contribute to departmental teaching and supervise residents’ projects leading to publications.
• Support recruitment to clinical trials and practice evidence-based medicine.

Job description

The post holder will work as one of a team of Consultant Burns and Plastic Surgeons, covering the Regional Burns Service in the Midlands. The adult burns centre is based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust. Paediatric burns management takes place at the Birmingham Children’s Hospital. In addition, the post holder will have the opportunity to do an additional plastic surgery subspecialities depending on experience and interests. The postholder will become an integral part of the Burns MDT Team . They will join a well-established and active team of burn surgeons who work across both hospital sites to provide care in both the Paediatric and Adult Burn Centres in Birmingham, as part of the Midlands Burn Operational Delivery Network., The Job Plan will comprise of 10 programmed activities, including burns on-call across the QE hospital and Birmingham Children’s Hospital. The job plan will be subject to the needs of the service and experience of the successful candidate. The final time table will be constructed following discussion with the successful candidate and will result in an agreed job plan. The job plan will be mainly in burns, but there will some opportunities to take part in general plastic surgery.

The appointee will participate in the 1:7 burns on call rota covering the adult burns centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the paediatric burns centre at Birmingham Children Hospital Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Also, the appointee will be part of burns MDT at both QEHB and BCH.

The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to departmental teaching and support residents with projects leading to publications and presentations. The involvement in continuing medical education is an integral part of the advertised post and as such, the successful candidate will be expected to support recruitment to clinical trials and practice evidence-based medicine. The appointee will be expected to participate in all aspects of clinical governance as developed by the Trust to monitor, maintain and develop the quality and effectiveness of care.
