Job description

Locomotive Technician - Electrical Engineer

Location: Chesterfield Area (commutable from Worksop, Mansfield, etc.) Depots are based within 15 miles of each other (25 mins apart)

Salary: GBP40,000 - GBP48,000 DOE with potential for some overtime

Annual Leave: 36 days (28 days + 8 days bank holiday)

Join our expert rail depot team! We are hiring an Electrically Biased Locomotive Technician to maintain and repair a range of diesel-electric locomotives, including Class 20, 08, 37, 47, and 56.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Electrical fault-finding on DC traction systems, generators, alternators, and control circuits (24V - 850V DC)
  2. Repair and maintain traction and auxiliary systems, including English Electric and Sulzer control systems
  3. Diagnose and resolve faults using schematics, wiring diagrams, multimeters, and Megger testers
  4. Work on electro-pneumatic & electro-hydraulic interfaces
  5. Complete maintenance logs and use CMMS systems for compliance reporting
What We're Looking For:
  1. Experience in rail and rolling stock electrical maintenance
  2. Strong understanding of diesel-electric traction systems
  3. Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Person Specification:
  • Qualifications & Experience:
    • NVQ level 3 or ONC or equivalent in a related engineering discipline
    • Time-served experience in electrical engineering
    • A strong understanding of locomotive or rolling stock systems is highly desirable
    • Previous experience with schematic diagrams and control systems
  • Skills:
    • Ability to interpret technical documents and work instructions
    • Proactive, detail-oriented, and safety-focused
    • Strong teamwork and communication skills
  • Work Schedule:
    • Monday to Friday, Day Shifts 7 am to 3 pm (35-hour working week)
    • 1-hour lunch break
    • Overtime available on an as-needed basis
    • On-site role across two depot locations in the Chesterfield area
  • Compensation & Benefits:
    • Salary: GBP40,000 - GBP48,000 depending on experience (increases tied to development and performance)
