Overview

Mobile Locomotive Maintenance Engineer (Home-Based) Location: North Midlands (Ideal base: Chesterfield, Sheffield, Derby, Nottingham, Mansfield), but with travel to Hull, Liverpool, Birmingham, Felixstowe and Southampton.

Salary: Up to £48,000 DOE + Overtime + All Travel time paid for

The Opportunity

We’re recruiting for a Mobile Locomotive Engineer to join a UK-wide maintenance team. This is a home-based role with travel, providing hands-on support for diesel-electric locomotives. You’ll cover customer depots, sidings, and industrial sites, working on locomotives including: Class 08, Class 20, Class 31, Class 33, Class 37, Class 47, Class 56.

This role involves UK-wide travel and some overnight stays, with all expenses covered. You’ll have a fully equipped van and autonomy to manage your own schedule.

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out planned and reactive maintenance on locomotives at customer sites throughout the UK
  • Diagnose and repair DC traction systems, generators, alternators, low-voltage and control circuits (24V–850V DC)
  • Work on electro-pneumatic, electro-hydraulic systems, and auxiliary components
  • Interpret and work from wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical manuals
  • Use diagnostic equipment: multimeters, insulation testers, laptop-based fault-finding tools
  • Record all work via a Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS)
  • Work safely and independently, representing the company on-site with professionalism
What We’re Looking For
  • Experience maintaining freight, industrial, or heritage locomotives, particularly from the classes listed
  • Strong electrical bias, with mechanical skills desirable
  • Comfortable working independently in a mobile capacity
  • Full UK driving licence (van and fuel card provided)
  • Willing to travel extensively, with occasional overnight stays
