Job description

Litigation Solicitor

Location: Hereford
Salary: Up to £60,000 (DOE)
Working Arrangement: Hybrid

About the Role

An established regional law firm is looking to strengthen its Litigation and Dispute Resolution team with the appointment of an experienced Litigation Solicitor.

Based in the firm’s Hereford office, this is an excellent opportunity for a solicitor who enjoys a genuinely broad litigation caseload rather than being restricted to one narrow area of contentious work.

You will work closely with the Head of Civil Litigation and become part of an established department dealing with matters for both private individuals and business clients. The position offers plenty of opportunity to take ownership of files, develop direct client relationships and build your experience across a varied range of disputes.

The firm is particularly interested in lawyers who are comfortable managing their own caseload whilst being keen to develop further within a supportive team.

About the Firm

This is a long-established and highly regarded regional practice with a significant presence across Herefordshire and the surrounding area.

The firm has a legal team of approximately 50 people operating across three offices and provides a broad range of services to private individuals, businesses, property owners and organisations. Its Hereford office is the firm's principal office and houses a number of its core commercial and private client teams.

The litigation practice itself covers a wide spectrum of civil disputes, giving the successful solicitor exposure to considerably more variety than can often be found within a heavily specialised litigation department. The team is led by the firm's Head of Civil Litigation and supported by paralegal and secretarial resource.

The firm offers the opportunity to join a well-established practice with strong local roots, good-quality work and a genuine opportunity to become an important part of the continued development of its litigation offering.

The role will involve:
  • Managing your own varied caseload of civil and commercial litigation matters
  • Advising on contractual and breach of contract disputes
  • Property, land and boundary disputes
  • Landlord and tenant matters
  • Professional negligence claims
  • Contentious probate and inheritance disputes
  • Consumer disputes and general civil litigation
  • Taking matters from initial instruction through to settlement, trial or alternative dispute resolution
  • Drafting correspondence, pleadings, witness statements and other court documentation
  • Instructing and liaising with Counsel and expert witnesses where appropriate
  • Advising clients on litigation strategy, risk and costs
  • Negotiating settlements and exploring alternative dispute resolution where appropriate
  • Developing strong relationships with existing clients
  • Supporting the continued growth and development of the litigation department
To be successful in this role, you will:
  • Be a qualified Solicitor or Chartered Legal Executive with experience in litigation and dispute resolution
  • Ideally have around 2 years’ PQE or more, although applications will be considered based on relevant experience
  • Have experience handling your own litigation caseload
  • Have a good understanding of the Civil Procedure Rules
  • Be confident dealing directly with clients and managing matters with appropriate autonomy
  • Have strong drafting, negotiation and communication skills
  • Be commercially aware and able to provide practical, straightforward advice
  • Be comfortable working across a varied range of contentious matters rather than specialising exclusively in one area
  • Have an interest in developing relationships and contributing towards the continued growth of the department
What You’ll Get in Return
  • Salary of up to £60,000 depending on experience
  • Hybrid working
  • The opportunity to join an established and respected regional practice
  • A genuinely varied civil and commercial litigation caseload
  • Direct exposure to the Head of Civil Litigation
  • Good levels of autonomy alongside senior support
  • An established client base and strong flow of contentious work
  • Scope to develop your profile and career within the department
  • A supportive working environment within a firm with longstanding roots in the Herefordshire legal market
