Literacy Mentor

Location: Barnet
Start: September 2025
Hours: 8.30am - 4pm approximately
Salary: £19,500 - £22,500

Do you believe in the power of reading to unlock potential, inspire creativity, and build confidence?

If so, you could be the perfect candidate for this Reading Mentor position in Barnet.

What is a Literacy Mentor?

As a Literacy Mentor, you'll work 1:1/small groups with secondary pupils who need extra support to improve their reading skills. You'll help them discover the joy of books, build their confidence, and develop a lifelong love of reading. Whether it's through subject related literature or extra-curricular materials, your goal is to improve their literacy skills. You will mainly be working with EAL and SEN pupils.

Key responsibilities:

* Plan and deliver engaging interventions to aid progress.
* Feed progress back to the Subject Teachers, SENCo and parents.
* Be creative with activities and materials to suit different learning styles.
* Promote reading for pleasure.
* Support SLT with extra-curricular activities such as book clubs and reading incentives.

Requirements:

* A UK degree in a Humanities subject. English is desirable.
* Strong knowledge of the secondary curriculum
* Previous experience working with children is highly desirable.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
* Patience, empathy, and the ability to inspire and motivate children.
* Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain one).
* Interest in teacher training.
