Job summary

WSP is expanding its Lighting and Energy Solutions team in the UK, seeking Lighting Engineers from Engineer to Principal level to support Local Government and Strategic Road Network projects. The role involves detailed design, feasibility studies, and collaboration with manufacturers and contractors.

Ideal candidates will have strong lighting design expertise, proficiency in Lighting Reality/Dialux/AutoCAD, and the ability to coach junior staff.

Qualifications

  • Experience in lighting design from conception to issue for construction.
  • Proficient with Lighting Reality or Dialux and AutoCAD.
  • Knowledge of external lighting standards and regulations.
  • Ability to coach and develop junior team members.
  • Experience in Local Government or Strategic Road Network sectors.
  • Member of a relevant professional organisation or working towards IEng/CEng.

Responsibilities

  • Produce detailed design layouts and drawings per QA and client requirements.
  • Prepare feasibility reports, option reports and specs.
  • Engage with luminaire, column, controls and electrical manufacturers.
  • Coordinate with contractors including site support and RFIs/TQs.
  • Complete non-intrusive site visits for lighting assessments.
  • Develop proposals and track progress against milestones and budget.
  • Liaise with Local Authority and Strategic Road Network clients.

Our Lighting and Energy Solutions (L&ES) business provides comprehensive lighting and electrical engineering design and advisory services for all aspects of light, lighting and low‑voltage energy. We work with clients across public and private sectors, locally and internationally.

The team is located across the UK and our key locations include: Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow, Hertfordshire, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Southampton and Brighton.

A Little More About Your Role… We have a number of opportunities for Lighting Engineers from Engineer up to Principal Engineer level to provide support to our Local Government and Strategic Road Network capabilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Production of detailed design layouts, engineering detailed drawings and support documentation in accordance with WSPs Quality Assurance and client requirements.
  • Preparation of feasibility reports and technical notes, optioneering reports and specifications.
  • Engagement with luminaire, column, controls and electrical manufacturers.
  • Co‑ordination with contractors including site support, responding to RFI’s and TQ’s.
  • Completion of non‑intrusive site visits to support the development of lighting assessments and site clearance drawings.
  • Support with the development of project proposals and progress against agreed programme milestones and budget constraints.
  • Liaison with Local Authority and Strategic Road Network clients building strong working relationships.
  • Analyse/Evaluate Clients briefs and offer expert guidance and tailored support.
  • Liaison with colleagues within the Lighting and Energy Solutions team, wider multi‑disciplinary design teams, stakeholders and clients.
  • Guide junior team members and Early Career Professionals on their career journeys.
  • Represent WSP within the lighting industry, fostering industry relationships and driving business development.

What We Will Be Looking For You To Demonstrate…
  • Proficient in the use of Lighting Reality or Dialux lighting design software and AutoCAD.
  • A strong understanding of external lighting standards, guidance, legislation and regulations.
  • A good general awareness and understanding of electrical design and lighting maintenance operations.
  • Can demonstrate competency in lighting design from conception through to issue for construction with experience in the use of Lighting Reality or Dialux lighting design software and AutoCAD.
  • Can work independently, and as part of a team having excellent communication and organisational skills.
  • Capable of coaching and developing junior members of the team.
  • Experience in working within the Local Government or Strategic Road Network sectors.
  • A good knowledge of external lighting products.
  • Have a membership of a relevant professional organisation, having achieved IEng / CEng status for more Senior roles or be working towards this for more junior positions.
For more senior roles you will also be able to demonstrate:
  • Experience in leading projects and teams and should be confident in a management capacity.
  • Risk awareness both in terms of CDM and financial risk with the ability to manage or mitigate accordingly.
  • The ability to coach and develop junior members of the team.
