Job summary

WSP in the UK & Ireland is seeking Lighting Engineers to deliver comprehensive lighting and electrical engineering services across various sectors, including local government. This position offers opportunities from Engineer to Principal Engineer level.

Qualifications

  • Proficient in lighting design software and AutoCAD.
  • Understanding of lighting standards and regulations.
  • Experience in lighting design from conception to construction.

  • Experience in the Local Government or Strategic Road Network sectors.

Responsibilities

  • Produce detailed design layouts and documentation.

Job Description

At WSP, the Lighting and Energy Solutions (L&ES) business delivers comprehensive lighting and electrical engineering design and advisory services across public and private sectors. We have a growing team of lighting professionals located in the UK (Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow, Hertfordshire, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Southampton and Brighton). This role offers positions for Lighting Engineers from Engineer to Principal Engineer level, supporting our Local Government and Strategic Road Network capabilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Production of detailed design layouts, engineering detailed drawings and support documentation in accordance with WSP’s Quality Assurance and client requirements.
  • Preparation of feasibility reports and technical notes, optioneering reports and specifications.
  • Engagement with luminaire, column, controls and electrical manufacturers.
  • Co‑ordination with contractors including site support, responding to RFIs and TQs.
  • Completion of non‑intrusive site visits to support lighting assessments and site clearance drawings.
  • Support development of project proposals and progress against agreed programme milestones and budget constraints.
  • Liaison with Local Authority and Strategic Road Network clients, building strong working relationships.
  • Analyse and evaluate client briefs, offer expert guidance and tailored support.
  • Collaborate with the Lighting and Energy Solutions team, wider multidisciplinary design teams, stakeholders and clients.
  • Guide junior team members and Early Career Professionals on their career journeys.
  • Represent WSP within the lighting industry, fostering industry relationships and driving business development.
Qualifications
  • Proficient in the use of Lighting Reality or Dialux lighting design software and AutoCAD.
  • Strong understanding of external lighting standards, guidance, legislation and regulations.
  • Good general awareness and understanding of electrical design and lighting maintenance operations.
  • Demonstrated competency in lighting design from conception through to issue for construction.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team with excellent communication and organisational skills.
  • Capability to coach and develop junior team members.
  • Experience working within the Local Government or Strategic Road Network sectors.
  • Good knowledge of external lighting products.
  • Membership of a relevant professional organisation, having achieved IEng/CEng status for more senior roles or working towards this for junior positions.
Additional Requirements for Senior Roles
  • Experience in leading projects and teams, confident in a management capacity.
  • Risk awareness related to CDM and financial risk, with the ability to manage or mitigate accordingly.
  • Ability to coach and develop junior members of the team.
