Job description

Brilliant Lighting are a leading lighting design and Lutron lighting controls dealer, working on highly prestigious projects across the UK and abroad. Lighting design combines the aesthetics of disciplines like interior design and interior architecture with a substantial amount of lighting technical knowledge and construction experience. We are the ‘glue’ connecting client aesthetic and usage requirements with designing a beautiful scheme and liaising with the site team on the ground.

We work with fabulous clients, predominantly high net worth individuals and selected commercial clients eg; The National Trust, Betty’s Team rooms, and Hever Castle.

Position Overview

We are seeking a new full-time Lighting Designer to join the team. The role will be wide-ranging and will depend on experience, but will include:

  • Working with clients and wider design teams to develop overall lighting designs and CAD plans. Unless you have direct prior experience then initially a lot of the design concepts will come from more senior designers in our team, but we would see the right candidate rapidly growing in confidence in this area.
  • Using Dialux and/or Sketchup to mock up key areas.
  • Researching and recommending suitable products for a particular project. This requires you to have empathy with the client and their brief, and an understanding architectural and historical styles and references.
  • Resolving client and site team queries.
  • Liaising with suppliers to resolve technical queries, and liaising with the onsite electrical and construction teams to ensure that designs are installed correctly.
  • Liaising with other relevant sub-contractors on the job, eg; joiners, cabinet makers, kitchen and bathroom companies etc, to ensure that designs and fittings are beautifully integrated.
  • Keeping accurate records of project related costs and helping to manage project budgets.
Core Requirements

We expect to do a lot of in-house training, but core requirements to be considered for the post are:

  • A strong aesthetic and design sense.
  • Experience of Revit is not necessary but a plus.
  • Competence in 3D modelling, graphics and other related software packages are an advantage.
  • Excellent communication and inter-personal skills.
  • Organisational skills, attention to detail and being a ‘completer finisher’ are essential, but you should also know when to apply the 80:20 rule.
  • A proactive approach, good memory, strong work ethic and a desire to learn and get stuck in.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced small team environment - with the ambiguity that that sometimes entails.
  • Willingness and ability to be on project sites when required.
  • Valid UK driving licence and vehicle.
  • A permanent right to live and work in the UK. This is essential; please only apply if you have it.

Most people who join the team don’t have direct prior experience of lighting design, instead coming from wider interior design, architectural or electrical backgrounds. We give lots of training in house, and out of house where available.

The role will be based out of our offices in Thirsk, North Yorkshire. Projects are generally in the north of England but may be in the South or abroad. Subject to business requirements the team are also able to work from home some of the time.

We will tailor the role and remuneration to suit skills and prior experience. Suitable candidates may have recently graduated, or be a few years into their design career.

Other Benefits

· Holidays increase with long service.

· Brilliant Lighting recently transitioned to being an employee-owned business (through an Employee Ownership Trust), so our long-term employees can share in the success of the business.

Please send your portfolio and CV including qualifications and experience.
