Job description

Cory is one of the UK’s leading waste management and recycling companies.

Cory operates one of the largest energy from waste facilities in the United Kingdom, with a unique river-based infrastructure on the Thames for delivering waste.

Cory is currently investing more than £900 million in its operations and river infrastructure. On the river, we have invested in two additional tugs and a fleet of barges to service our Riverside 2 energy from waste facility which is currently being built next to the company's existing energy from waste facility in Belvedere in addition to our existing business.

We are currently recruiting for a Lighterage Supervisor at Charlton. This is a key role to effectively plan, organise and control the day-to-day operations of Cory Lighterage through the effective and efficient utilisation of all resources available to the post holder, in order to achieve prescribed operational, safety and financial objectives.

Key elements of the role:

The successful candidate will:

  • Oversee daily tug and craft deployment, ensuring operational and contractual requirements are met efficiently.

  • Liaise with team members, wharf managers, local authorities, and customers to resolve issues and improve service delivery.

  • Monitor river traffic and incidents to minimise disruption and maintain smooth operations.

  • Support the implementation and auditing of the Safety Management System, and contribute to accident investigations and risk assessments.

  • Assist with recruitment, induction, and competency assessments, and support performance monitoring and development of tug crews.

  • Manage fuel, PPE, ropes, and stores to meet operational and safety needs, ensuring cost-effective procurement and distribution.

  • Maintain accurate records on operations, wages, and absences; validate overtime and additional payments; and support union negotiations.

  • Coordinate vessel and equipment maintenance with technical teams and contractors to ensure operational readiness.

  • Carry out other reasonable duties as required.

The individual we are looking for will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and experience:

  • Educated to GCSE/O-level standard

  • Leadership, performance management and problem-solving skills

  • Experience of staff management

  • Strategic planning

  • Excellent knowledge and experience of waterborne operations on tidal waters

  • Sound understanding of Lighterage operation and port procedures

  • Team player

  • PC skills, particularly in Microsoft Office

In addition, the following skills and experience are desirable:

  • Holder of a suitable marine qualification or be a time-served apprentice in the Lighterage industry

  • Project management

  • Served as a Tug Master

Please note: The successful candidate will be required to be ‘on call’ on a 24-hour basis to deal with any problems that might arise normal operational hours. They will be required to maintain mobile phone cover outside regular hours and work weekends when tugs are working, on a rota basis.
